Superman & Lois Avoids Cancellation, To Continue Beyond Season 3

Superman & Lois escapes cancellation and will continue beyond its third season. But he won’t be the only live-action Superman. Superman will return to theaters in 2024 under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios. Sadly, DC Studios confirmed nearly two months ago that Henry Cavill won’t be portraying the iconic superhero this time around.

Nevertheless, it’s exciting to know we still have a terrific Superman in case Gunn’s version crashes and burns. At first, Gunn’s Man of Steel left many wondering where this news leaves Superman & Lois. Following the warm reception to his supporting role on the CW’s Supergirl, Tyler Hoechlin would receive his own spin-off.

However, Superman & Lois would be set within its own continuity with no ties to Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl. In addition, the story focuses on an older Superman who’s settled down with longtime love interest Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tullo.

The classic comic-book couple are dealing with their biggest challenge yet: Raising two teenage sons. The show has been praised by fans and critics for its writing, originality, cast, and respect for the source material. Moreover, it has become a stand out amongst its Arrowverse counterparts. Unfortunately, there was anxiety looming over fans of the show now that a new Superman film is coming.

After the formation of DC Studios, multiple movies and TV programs set for release were hit with sudden cancellations. The CW’s DC properties got axed except for Superman & Lois. The Flash will conclude with its ninth season, which premieres next week.

Furthermore, HBO Max ended other popular DC TV shows like Titans and Doom Patrol.

This has, of course, led to fears that Superman & Lois will be the next one on the chopping block. While this does sadly seem inevitable, it won’t be happening for a little while yet according to DC Studios’ co-CEOs.

Via Variety, Gunn and Safran said that they expect the show to run for “one to two more seasons.”

Gunn added:

“It’s a show everybody likes, so it’s going to keep going for a little bit.”

Hopefully, this will help put fans minds at ease. Of course this is upsetting to hear as it is basically a confirmation that the show is ending.

But at least we can still enjoy Superman & Lois for at least another season or more before it concludes.
