Melissa Benoist returns as Supergirl in The Flash‘s final season. According to sources, Melissa Benoist will appear in at least a single episode of The Flash‘s ninth season. Recently, The Flash added a Supergirl cast member for its last run. That would be Nicole Maines as Dreamer. Insiders claim that the series will include Melissa Benoist as well.

However, due to Benoist’s schedule, it’s unknown how much screen time she can pull off.

Benoist’s Supergirl first met Grant Gustin’s speedster in The Flash episode “Worlds Finest.’ The story took its name from the iconic Superman/Batman comic book, World’s Finest Comics. When the CW broadcast this installment in 2016, it made headlines as it crossed over with a series from another network, CBS. Granted, both programs shared the same producer in Greg Berlanti.

“Worlds Finest” aired during The Flash‘s initial season. In other words, this marked the early days of Berlanti’s Arrowverse. Without a doubt, this was the Golden Age of DC TV. Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl delivered DC Comics’ sense of wonder to the small screen. Critics and audiences praised these shows, even comparing them to their MCU theatrical competition. Certainly, the CW didn’t give Berlanti the budgets to match Marvel Studios’ epics. Nonetheless, nobody expected that. After all, this was simply network television.

Berlanti built a DC pocket universe that drew from ’70s and ’80s comic-book lore. “Worlds Finest” captured the warm friendship Superman and Batman had in the comics. In fact, some felt it created an alternative to Zack Snyder’s then-misunderstood Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Benoist and Gustin displayed charming chemistry in “Worlds Finest.”

Benoist starred in six seasons of Supergirl, which moved from CBS to the CW in 2016.

Supergirl ended on November 9, 2021. However, by that time its ratings swooped downward. Unfortunately, so did its standards of quality. Your mileage may vary, but Season Six of Supergirl found the program dated. Disney Plus’ MCU series pushed the envelope further, leaving the Arrowverse behind.

Nonetheless, seeing Benoist as Supergirl again evokes sweet nostalgia.

It’s only fitting that she be there when The Flash cruises into the sunset.
