James Gunn Has No Replacement for Henry Cavill's Superman Despite Casting Rumors

James Gunn still has no replacement for Henry Cavill’s Superman, debunking yet another fake DC rumor. Yesterday social media jumped on news that Euphoria‘s Jacob Elordi could replace Cavill. Certainly, Elordi fits the type, the kind of young pretty boy that’ll make SnyderVerse fans cringe. Admittedly, I haven’t seen Elordi before. This, I cannot judge his acting skills.

Nonetheless, he fits that Robert Pattinson mold during Twilight. Granted, Henry Cavill has pin-up looks, too. But even before his Man of Steel debut, he was built. You could imagine him lifting a car and throwing it at criminals.

Elordi seems more like a prom king than a Superman. Sound cynical? Just being candid. DC Studios has given us no reason to feel excited thus far. In fact, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn started his job in the worst way. He pulled Cavill away from Superman and cancelled Man of Steel 2.

He whined to hardcore DC followers that he just started. Give him a break while he removes things that fans actually like. Maybe he should’ve asked former DC Films president Walter Hamada for a training manual.

The only thing inspiring about DC right now is YouTuber Skiiwalker Tha Jedi‘s #SellZSJLtoNetflix campaign. Of course, Gunn sycophants attack that with glee. In the meantime, their king has no plans to share yet. Moreover, his only DC movie remains a mammoth flop in The Suicide Squad.

Gunn’s The Suicide Squad hit theaters on August 5, 2021. Despite critical praise, it only earned $171.7 million worldwide. Some defend the movie’s weak performance to the pandemic and simultaneous release on HBO Max. With a reported budget of $185 million, it definitely lost money.

Halloween Kills, also R-rated, launched in a similar fashion and under the same conditions. In contrast, it grabbed over $133 million globally that October.

In any case, those waiting for the new Superman will have to wait. Although James Gunn will apparently reveal projects from his DC slate, the next Superman actor won’t be included.

On one hand, Gunn debunks the Elordi gossip. He stated:

“My thoughts are no one has been cast as Superman yet. Casting, as is almost always the case with me, will happen after the script is finished or close to finished, and it isn’t. We’ll announce a few things in not too long, but the casting of Superman won’t be one of them.”

In other words, Elordi isn’t from Krypton. At least, not yet. After all, Gunn didn’t take him out of consideration. I believe Elordi could be the type they’re internally seeking. Hopefully, he isn’t.

He simply said he hasn’t chosen a Superman yet. Furthermore, work continues on the script.

According to Gunn, his movie will focus on Superman’s younger days. In other words, it sounds like Smallville season 11. Smallville had viewers wait a decade to see Tom Welling in costume.

Thus, it’s fitting that people anticipated Man of Steel 2 for ten years. For nothing.

Gunn writing a Superman film feels like an odd choice. Certainly, his comedic touch doesn’t seem suitable for the material. 1983’s flop Superman III epitomized what could go wrong with such a tone. Without a doubt, Gunn is a better writer than that.

Originally, Henry Cavill would have faced Brainiac in Man of Steel 2. Frequent Zack Snyder collaborator Charles Roven would’ve returned to produce.

Gunn erased the plans.

When a writer edits their or someone else’s work, they intend to improve it. Not Joss Whedon it.

Some argue that we should rally around Gunn. Why? Do you rally around your favorite sports team if the owners make horrible trades? That kind of unconventional love is earned, man.

Imagine if Marvel Studios pulled out Tom Holland and recast him in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Then removed Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.

We’re supposed to say, “Thank you”?

Seriously?

Prove it on the field and then we’ll applaud. But if Superman ends up being a flavor-of-the-month heartthrob, we will wait for Netflix to save the day.
