Green Lantern Not Cancelled At HBO Max

James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, clarifies that the company has not cancelled the HBO Max Green Lantern series.

Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios have been getting a lot of bad press lately. We’ve been getting news after news on DC disappointments. With Henry Cavill now hanging up his cape, then the third Wonder Woman movie no longer going forward. And recently, The Rock’s plan for Black Adam vs. Superman also meeting its end. All these including decisions WBD did months ago as they canceled Batgirl, The Wonder Twins, and Strange Adventures. Currently, it just feels like they are going on a cancelling spree.

So, when CBR posted that the studio cancelled Greg Berlanti’s Green Lantern for HBO Max, it didn’t really shock a lot of people. But it did make us wonder why do that when they were willing to make changes. Nevertheless, Gunn fired the shot and called the report “Fake.”

Gunn has the reputation for being active in social media. Fans also know that he points out misinformation from many news and scoop sites. Geekosity got noticed by Gunn, too, and also pointed out his issues with our report. Hey, at least we know Gunn takes the time to check out our social media pages.

That said, it seems that HBO Max’ Green Lantern is still in development. The last time we heard about the project is that they are still looking for a new writer and show runner for the series. That was back in October, even before WBD established DC Studios. Seth Grahame-Smith already finished writing eight episodes for the show and it focused on Guy Gardner and Alan Scott. But WBD wanted to focus on John Stewart. Thus, Grahame-Smith opted to leave the project. Unfortunately, this also forced the development to start from scratch.

It’s kind of surprising that Green Lantern is still a ‘go’ considering they have to start all over again. However, the main reason why it also survived is that they are still in the very early stages of development. Green Lantern is one of the most popular brands in DC Comics. Each iteration of Justice League usually had one version of the character. Even Zack Snyder wanted to add Green Lantern with Wayne T. Carr as John Stewart. And in the Arrowverse, David Ramsey’s John Diggle was revealed to be Stewart.

There is no question as to why WBD wants Stewart instead of Gardner and Scott. Still, even though the project is still has a lantern alive, its place in the current DC Universe is uncertain. Nevertheless, we are looking forward to seeing it, since it’s going to be the first series that is part of the new DCU.
