Jason Momoa is rumored to exit the Aquaman franchise and become the DCU’s Lobo. Per scooper Jeff Sneider, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom left Jason Momoa disappointed. He tweeted:

“I hear it’s terrible and that’s why Momoa is gonna be Lobo going forward. But they can’t say that yet because then it would be a lame duck… and DC is hoping to wring another billion out of the box office. First one was awful too, so not a huge surprise.”

Certainly, whether 2018’s Aquaman was quality cinema or not is up to the viewer. Director James Wan was obviously aiming for an upbeat, colorful MCU vibe. At the box office, he succeeded. Aquaman shocked the industry by earning more than $1 billion global. It became the first and only DCEU movie to do so.

On the other hand, the sequel might not be so lucky.

Since Aquaman, female lead Amber Heard was entangled in various legal troubles with former husband Johnny Depp. An online petition to have her fired as Mera netted thousands of signatures. Nevertheless, Heard still appears in Lost Kingdom although Warner Bros. Discovery significantly cut her role.

Still, Heard’s bad PR is bound to hurt the movie like with Ezra Miller and The Flash. Granted, if Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom turns into a solid adventure, audiences can see past that.

Unfortunately, a recent test screening alarmed WBD with its poor reception.

Then again, the studio won’t release the film until December 25, 2023. There’s nearly a year for Wan to please Jason Momoa and future preview crowds.

In late July 2022, YouTube personality Syl Abdul grabbed headlines when he revealed Ben Affleck’s Batman appears in the movie. Jason Momoa confirmed it himself a day later. That triggered substantial social-media buzz over the film.

Unfortunately, the movie seems to have deleted Affleck (and the previously rumored Michael Keaton) from recent screenings.

Given DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn’s upcoming reboot, Jason Momoa is now a fish out of water.

Thus, the movie is somewhat pointless unless they continue it as an Elseworlds project. At least The Flash opens up the multiverse. In other words, it serves a purpose.

In January, Jason Momoa posted an Instagram video about his DCU future. Many speculated that he will be Lobo.

There’s no doubt about that now.
