Marvel Studios Returns To More Serious Fare With Secret Invasion

Secret Invasion exposed a huge secret in its riveting new trailer. In fact, it dropped a major spoiler, especially for those who saw it on YouTube with the subtitles on. It reveals Emilia Clarke’s mysterious role in Marvel Studios‘ upcoming Disney Plus miniseries.

After a turbulent last couple of years, the MCU is hoping to get back on track with its future releases. Indeed, Phase Four suffered some of Marvel Studios’ first cracks in its once-impenetrable armor. Specifically, Eternals and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania didn’t land well with film critics, once a strength with the MCU.

Although Rotten Tomatoes should have no influence on the box office, general audiences unfortunately rely on them too much. For example, RT critics’ scores continue to handicap DC’s movies. Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel deserved far higher than its bewildering 56% rotten rating. Without a doubt, low scores hurt Black Adam (which didn’t deserve it) and Shazam! Fury of the Gods (likely did).

From all the footage shown, Secret Invasion looks like vintage MCU with a tight focus, real-life urgency, and a heightened sense of paranoia like Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

The expected delays of various projects have begun over at Marvel Studios and not at a moment too soon. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige carried too much on his plate, causing some quality issues.

The thrilling Secret Invasion doesn’t look it was affected such problems. And the trailer answers a huge question: Who is Clarke playing? The close-captioned version on YouTube exposes it. Clarke is G’iah. In other words, she’s a Skrull. Not just any Skrull, though.

Vanity Fair confirmed this with an exclusive new look at the spy thriller.

During his interview, star Samuel L. Jackson explained that Clarke will be portraying Talos’ (Mendelsohn) daughter.

The legendary actor said:

“Remember when Ben was there with his wife and daughter? She’s the little Skrull girl grown up. She’s his daughter.”

When it was announced that Clarke was joining the MCU, speculation about what her role could be ran wild. Initially, it was believed she would be portraying S.W.O.R.D.’s Abigail Brand. In addition, there were even rumors of her being the MCU’s version of Jessica Drew.

Clarke was also interviewed as part of Vanity Fair’s coverage of Secret Invasion. While talking to the outlet, she’s opened up on her character’s journey since first appearing in 2019’s Captain Marvel.

Explaining how growing up amidst an still ongoing war, the actress said:

“It’s hardened her, for sure. There’s a kind of punk feeling that you get from this girl, she’s a refugee kid who’s had Talos for a dad, you know what I mean? Maybe the fact that we didn’t know he had a kid up until this point tells you everything you need to know about their relationship.”

Going into further detail, it sounds like G’iah could potentially be more of an enemy than an ally. Her relationship with her father has seemingly become estranged and her faith in Fury and humanity is now shattered.

Clarke explained:

“These people promised a lot of stuff a long time ago, and not a lot has happened. So understandably, a certain amount of resentment has been built, there’s a lot of emotions that live within her, and there’s a lot of confrontational aspects to her character that have come from circumstance. You understand why she has the feelings that she does.”

Secret Invasion is sounding like it be one of the grittiest entries to the MCU to date. For those who complained that Thor: Love and Thunder was overly goofy, Secret Invasion takes the opposite direction.
