Hugh Jackman hints that time travel could explain his Wolverine’s return in Deadpool 3. The following may contain spoilers.

It’s no secret that Jackman is back to reprise his role as Wolverine. What was once a fantasy will soon be a reality. Especially, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine with the comic-book accurate Deadpool. But now that it’s all official, we all wonder how it will turn out. Many ask questions about how this could happen. Particularly because his character died in Logan.

Many consider director James Mangold’s Logan to be the best X-Men film. Indeed, it’s an incredible take on the character; after all, it didn’t hold back on how violent it could be. Logan’s end was perfect for Wolverine. But this happens in the year 2029 in its timeline. So far, Deadpool 3 happens in the MCU timeline. At the moment, we all wonder where and when Deadpool and Wolverine fit into the MCU.

Hugh Jackman was able to share details at Radio Andy on SiriusXM. He talks about his return as Wolverine and the movie’s place in his timeline:

I just put it aside and I was like, ‘No, no I’m done.’ And then we made ‘Logan’ and I was super happy with it. But all because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines now we can go back, because, you know, it’s science. And so I don’t have to screw with the Logan timeline which was important to me, and I think probably to the fans, too.

As to what this device is that can move around timeline, there are possibly two. One is that in Deadpool 2, Cable (Josh Brolin) held that time-travel device. It’s something that Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) played around with at the end of the film. Another item that Jackman might be talking about is the TemPad that was used by the TVA (Time Variance Authority). In other words, the film could be heavily connected with the Loki series.

There are rumors that several actors from Loki may show up in Deadpool 3. Wouldn’t it be interesting to see Morbius (Owen Wilson) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) meeting up with Wolverine and Deadpool? Not only that, but several actors from the X-Men franchise might show up, too. But right now, all of these are rumors, nothing confirmed as of yet. After what Jackman said recently, it does make some sense that they’ll meet up with familiar characters from the TVA.

But as we’ve seen in Loki, playing around with timelines can create branching timelines and multiple universes. The main function of the TVA was to maintain that single timeline. Fans who watched Loki understand, the end of the program resulted into what the MCU is now. The multiverse is unlocked and anything that could have happened, has happened and may happen.

For a while, we reported that Deadpool 3’s Wolverine might be a variant. Why would we think that? Well, the MCU has shown a variant version of Professor X. Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Logan are not the same character. In Logan, this seems like the same Professor X in the 20th Century Fox movies. While in the Doctor Strange sequel, Professor X is more similar to the cartoon version. Both have died in very different circumstances.

Jackman has been adamant that he wants to maintain what Logan has achieved. None of the filmmakers want to disregard Logan. In other words, the Wolverine that we’ll see in Deadpool 3 may be the original one. If that is the case, then he will make sure that his character will return to his own timeline. This will make sure that the events Logan do happen.
