David Ayer Praises DC Studios Leadership On Twitter

Written by Edwin Francisco

David Ayer praised the new DC Studios leadership on Twitter. Specifically, it was DC Studios’ co-CEO James Gunn.

People have their eyes on Gunn and Peter Safran, the heads of the newly formed DC Studios, as fans campaign to #ReleaseTheAyerCut.

Interestingly, DC followers declared November 5 as “Release The Ayer Cut” day. Hence, on that day, fans bombarded Twitter with posts to #ReleaseTheAyerCut. For the unfamiliar, this is in relation to David Ayer’s DC film Suicide Squad (2016). Above all, they know that the film that went out of the editing room was not what the director wanted.

Still, fans remember that DC Films wanted to change the film midway through production. Moreover, it’s no secret that the film that people saw in theaters was not the one that Ayer made. In fact, even the director himself David Ayer joined in the fun with his post just saying:

#ReleaseTheAyerCut

David Ayer himself, as revealed in Entertainment Weekly, was not happy with what production released in theaters. He revealed this when Warner Bros. gave Zack Snyder’s Justice League a chance to see the light of day through HBO Max.

Since then, fans have been hoping that Suicide Squad might get the same treatment as Snyder’s film. The theatrical version of Justice League had so many changes that it even lost one of its main plots. As a result, Snyder described that the movie lost its heart.

Now it’s Ayer’s turn.

Many know that Gunn posts and reacts to Twitter activity on a regular basis. But admittedly, we also know that his new job will take up a lot of his free time to actually reply to any posts.

Nonetheless, Gunn did reply about the #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement, and said:

Opened up Twitter at the end of a long, creative weekend to see the many tweets to #SaveLegendsofTomorrow & #ReleaseTheAyerCut & fan support for other DC projects over the years. The majority of these requests were enthusiastic & respectful.

As the new (& first ever) CEOs of DC Studios, Peter & I think it’s important we acknowledge you, the fans, & let you know we hear your different desires for the pathways forward for DC.

Although our ability to interact on Twitter has been lessened due to the workload of our new positions, we are listening & open to everything as we embark on this journey, & will continue to do so for the next few years.

But all our initial focus is on the story going forward, hammering out the new DCU, & telling the Biggest Story Ever Told across multiple films, television shows, & animated projects.

We invite all of the DC fandoms from across the multiverse — and everyone else as well — into this new universe. We can’t wait to reveal more.

His answer seems vague in terms of actually releasing The Ayer Cut. On the other hand, Gunn’s position is focused on the creative side of the DCU. His job is developing new films and shows for the DC universe moving forward. Nonetheless, Gunn tweeted #ReleaseTheAyerCut to show his support.

Decisions regarding movies being put out fall to Warner Bros. Pictures Group co-chairs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy.

Ayer understands this. He tweeted to Gunn:

Beautifully said James. DC is lucky to have you.

Gunn and Safran have just started. And report cards aren’t given after only a week.
