Tom Welling reveals he’d like to continue the Smallville story in the Arrowverse. Of course, this would take place after the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover. If it ever happens. In December 2019, the CW adapted “Crisis” with five TV series. These included the DC shows Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman.

Unfortunately, there exists a major obstacle. The CW cancelled all those programs. The Flash hangs until its upcoming ninth season. Then it runs off into the sunset.

But before the Arrowverse was even a thing, the CW had Smallville. However, Smallville didn’t connect to a live-action superhero universe spread across several connected TV shows. Rather, it was a whole universe in one.

Simple times prior to the streaming years.

Smallville centered around a young Clark Kent (Tom Welling) and his 10- season long journey to becoming Superman. In addition, the show also featured countless other DC Comics icons along the way. Characters like Green Arrow (Justin Hartley), Aquaman (Alan Ritchson), Zatanna (Serinda Swan), Hawkman (Michael Shanks). and more.

Nevertheless, the show always focused on Superman. Or, more specifically, Kent. He didn’t turn into Superman yet. Particularly his origin story and his relationship with Lois Lane (Erica Durance).

The show concluded with Kent fully embracing his heroic persona. Alas, we only see the actor donning the character’s famous blue suit and red cape albeit for a split second. Many believed this would be the last time we’d see them in those roles again.

Then Welling and Durance returned briefly in “Crisis On Infinite Earths.” The nostalgic scene showed that Smallville‘s Kent and Lane had settled down and started a family. Moreover, Kent had ultimately given up his powers to focus on what was more important. Thus, no need for Welling in a costume.

Sigh.

This return obviously left us all wondering if they’d ever show up again in the Arrowverse. With the franchise set to end with the final season of The Flash, it’s unlikely. Nonetheless, Tom Welling and Erica Durance haven’t completely closed the door on potentially reprising their roles in the future.

During a recent appearance at MCM Comic Con London, the former co-stars opened up about another return.

At their panel, Welling answered:

“Like our own multiverse? Sure. Why not?”

To which Durance responded:

“It’d be fun.”

This actually isn’t the first time we’ve heard murmurs of a possible Smallville continuation. Welling and Michael Rosenbaum, who portrayed Lex Luthor, have both been working together on an animated revival since 2021.

Not much else about the potential project has since been revealed by either of the actors nor Warner Bros. With the ongoing restructuring of DC Studios, that could change.
