Star-Lord will have a solo film after the mammoth success of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Writer/director James Gunn may have ended his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, but Star-Lord’s adventures continue in the MCU with actor Chris Pratt. The following contains spoilers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ended with the original team of lovable misfits disbanding and going their separate ways. Drax (Dave Bautista) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) both stay on Knowhere to raise the Star Children after saving them from the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji).

Moreover, Mantis (Pom Klementieff) went on to forge her own path with the Abilisks while Gamora (Zoe Saldaña) rejoins the Ravagers. Rocket and Groot then form a new team of Guardians.

In addition, Star-Lord decides to stop running and finally returned home to Earth to reunite with his grandfather (Gregg Henry).

With this supposedly being Gunn’s final MCU movie, it seemed like each character’s journey had ended.

Nonetheless, a final message after the movie’s end-credit scene confirmed that Pratt’s Star-Lord would return.

Instead of the usual white letters with black background title card, the letters are instead black with a white background which reads:

“The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return.”

Furthermore, director Gunn confirmed on the commentary for Vol. 3‘s digital release that this potentially sets up a Legendary Star-Lord picture.

It turns out that both Gunn and Pratt have been discussing this spin-off for a while now. This means that the film will focus on Quill readjusting to life on Earth.

This also means that the filmmaker could return to the MCU as either a writer or producer while also running DC Studios.

During the film’s commentary, Gunn said:

Oh, but not quite over. We always want to give somebody a little something special. And Chris and I, forever, have talked about how great it would be to be able to do a ‘Legendary Star-Lord’ movie, a story with Star-Lord on Earth trying to adapt to the environment of Earth in the same way that somebody else might try to adapt to the alien environment of outer space. He’s a fish out of water in just kind of regular water. So I can’t wait to see it.

We could potentially have an official announcement for this movie the next time Marvel Studios decides to update their slate.
