Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Could Be James Gunn’s Last

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is tracking to smash $500 million worldwide in its second week. In other words, the dismal narrative that circulated through the anti-Disney chain of YouTube channels and media outlets is tossed in the garbage.

Disney haters may have wanted James Gunn‘s final Guardians of the Galaxy film to fail. However, positive reviews from critics and tremendous word-of-mouth from moviegoers have prevented that from becoming reality.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been one of the most highly anticipated releases for The Multiverse Saga. After the infamous firing and subsequent rehiring of director Gunn, the long-awaited sequel faced a significant delay.

Nonetheless, it seems as though that the extra-long wait was worth it as feedback has been out of this world.

As with the previous two movies, Vol. 3 has been praised for its stellar writing, strong performances, and enjoyable humor. In addition, it’s been described as one of the MCU’s darkest and most emotional entries yet.

Not only is this the conclusion to the trilogy, but also to the team of misfits we’ve know and love. Multiple actors have confirmed that this will be their last appearance in the MCU. That is. unless Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige sends a big check their way for Avengers: Secret Wars.

Moreover, it also marks the end of Gunn’s MCU tenure as he begins to take charge of the DCU. After Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania fell short at the box office, all eyes are now on Guardians.

Quantumania’s overall worldwide gross was a rare misfire for Marvel Studios which signaled a major behind-the-scenes shakeup. On the contrary, Vol. 3 is displaying strong legs at the box office.

Forbes broke down its take thus far:

On pace to hit $390+ million as it heads into Friday’s box office, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 should add another $50 million from North American markets and $80 million from foreign markets, to push it toward $520+/- million.

The reported budget for the movie was estimated to be around $250 million. There’s no doubt about it, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a hit. No flop, no MCU disaster. Still, it didn’t manage to break its predecessors’ opening weekend record. In the United States and Canada, Vol. 3 grossed $118.4 million while Vol. 2 made $146.5 million back in 2017.

A pretty big difference.

Yet keep in mind the MCU brand wasn’t as saturated in those pre-Disney Plus days. Nevertheless, the overall global total speaks for itself as its currently the sixth-highest grossing of 2023 so far.
