Matthew Vaughn Wants To Do Man Of Steel Sequel With Henry Cavill

X-Men veteran Matthew Vaughn still wants to do a Man of Steel sequel with Henry Cavill.

Matthew Vaughn was originally the top contender to helm a Superman reboot.

DC Films already had early discussions with him.

In fact, Vaughn revealed them in 2010 on MTV.

Specifically, he wanted his movie to be inspired by Richard Donner’s Superman films starring Christopher Reeve.

Matthew Vaughn detailed his vision in a recent interview:

I was desperate to do a Superman film. Desperate. I pitched a big Superman movie before they made Man of Steel. I still think there’s room for a new Superman film, but a proper Superman film. A colorful, fun Superman movie. Not a dark one.

How far Vaughn’s talks went are unknown.

Nevertheless, DC Films may have been fearful of that approach.

After all, Bryan Singer’s Superman: Returns (2006) was another film that was inspired by Donner.

Moreover, that didn’t turn out well.

Certainly, it’s possible that DC Films didn’t want the same style.

Indeed, Christopher Nolan’s brooding The Dark Knight (2008) was really popular then.

Ultimately, under the supervision of Nolan, DC Films chose Zack Snyder.

Snyder made Man of Steel (2013).

It was an angry, edgy look.

Vaughn is currently filming the spy movie Argylle with Henry Cavill.

But Henry Cavill hasn’t returned as Superman since additional filming for The Snyder Cut.

Still, Henry Cavill loves being Superman.

Indeed, they have a long history.

Henry Cavill portrayed the Man of Steel in an unreleased J.J. Abrams Superman concept film in 2004.

Yet with so many DC pics already in line, there’s still no new Man of Steel film.

But it does seem that Henry Cavill himself is working on his comeback to the DCEU.

We just don’t know when.

Nonetheless, Vaughn was not really keen on Snyder’s Superman.

He added:

I just thought it was a mistake putting the Batman vibe into the Superman world. I just think they’re two separate — they’re just not relatable in any way, in my mind. It should be fun. I mean, look, The Dark Knight was obviously different, and it made sense and it was brilliant, as a film and as a comic. But Superman was always… I loved the [Richard] Donner Superman movie, and I think Wonder Woman worked because, I think, Wonder Woman was basically remaking [Donner’s] Superman in a weird way. Yeah, I love Superman.

So do we.

Vaughn’s films have this consistent quality.

Thus, he’s one of the go-to directors for comics adaptations.

Among his notable works were Neil Gaiman’s Stardust, Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass, and Marvel’s X-Men: First Class.

With his background, it’s easy see why Vaughn might be a good fit to make a new Superman movie.
