The Ayer Cut Of Suicide Squad Rumored For HBO Max In 2022

David Ayer teased his Suicide Squad cut with a previously unreleased photo of Jared Leto‘s the Joker. It’s been unanimously decided by DC fans everywhere that 2016’s theatrical cut of Suicide Squad never happened.

Following Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s poor critical reception, Warner Bros. decided to change course. They ordered multiple reshoots and rewrites; therefore, the final film suffered greatly from studio interference. Moreover, director David Ayer promised that his original cut was a dark, gritty drama.

Instead, the final version turned into a hodgepodge of forced comedy, tonal shifts, and dreadful CGI. In addition, they sliced much of Leto’s Joker. Thus, audiences barely saw most of Leto’s work. Although the Joker was among the movie’s anticipated characters, DC Films chopped off his screen time. The decision made little sense.

Nevertheless, David Ayer recently shared a new look at Leto’s Joker from his original version. He gave fans another taste of what they missed. The picture shows Leto in a black-and-white tuxedo, similar to the one he wore in the film. However, he’s instead wearing a similar black tuxedo jacket with golden accents on the lapels and sleeves.

Why he shared this photo and what it means is anyone’s guess. Many are hoping it’s a tease that The Ayer Cut will finally be released. Looking back on The Ayer Cut, the acclaimed director said:

“I put my life into Suicide Squad. I made something amazing. My cut is an intricate and emotional journey with some bad people who are [expletive] on and discarded (a theme that resonates in my soul). The studio cut is not my movie. Read that again. And my cut is not the 10-week director’s cut – it’s a fully mature edit by Lee Smith standing on the incredible work by John Gilroy. It’s all Steven Price’s brilliant score, with not a single radio song in the whole thing. It has traditional character arcs, amazing performances, a solid third-act resolution. A handful of people have seen it.”

Hopes for the release of Ayer’s original cut have seemingly faded following the formation of DC Studios. Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean that all hope is lost for a potential release in the future. After all, many believed that we’d never get to see The Snyder Cut.

With that being said always remember Ben Affleck’s wise words from Zack Snyder’s Justice League:

“Faith, Alfred. Faith!”
