Batman v Superman: Startling Details On Controversial Scrapped Scene

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice had a controversial scrapped scene that director Zack Snyder discussed in a recent interview with the Russo Brothers. Snyder opened up on the removed Batman/Superman/Lois Lane love triangle. Certainly, it sounds like the kind of edgy, deconstructionist move writer Alan Moore (Watchmen) would’ve pulled in the ’80s.

However, it could’ve polarized general audiences. It’s no secret that Snyder had big plans for the DCEU’s future back when he was at the helm. Most of which were quickly trashed by Warner Bros. following the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice.

Nonetheless, the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League gave the filmmaker an opportunity to see some of his ideas happen. Nonetheless, there were still many that didn’t manage to make the final cut. Most notably, the ending scene featuring Wayne T. Carr as Green Lantern (John Stewart) visiting Bruce Wayne.

In the final cut, Bruce Wayne was instead visited by Martian Manhunter (Harry Lennix), who warned him about Darkseid’s imminent arrival. In addition, there was another more unusual plot point that never came to fruition.

Originally, Zack Snyder planned to include a romance between Batman and Lois Lane in his Justice League cut. This would’ve happened in the wake of Superman’s demise during the trinity’s climactic battle with Doomsday in Batman v Superman. Moreover, this would’ve eventually developed into a bizarre love triangle following the latter’s resurrection in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

When Snyder revealed this original plan for the three characters, opinions were divided to say the least. In the end it was probably for the best that this plot line didn’t come to fruition. Nonetheless, the director has expressed his disappointment that he couldn’t incorporate it into his overall story.

Recently, Snyder made a guest appearance on the Russo Brother’s YouTube show Pizza Film School. The legendary Marvel and DC directors spoke about Snyder’s original cut of Justice League in a special two-part episode. Furthermore, this gave Snyder the opportunity to discuss his abandoned plot path.

Once Superman had returned from the dead, Lane would’ve ended her relationship with Batman since she still loved the former.

Describing what he originally intended, Snyder explained:

“I think in the original script, Lois and Batman got together briefly. And there was this whole other thing that everyone was like, ‘Oh my God, you can’t do that. And… then I loved the idea of like setting up this sort of concept… it’s sort of like in a movie like where the husband goes off to war, and he’s dead, and the wife moves on, and then the husband appears, like, ‘I’m not dead. I’m fine.”

To which Joe Russo asked:

“How do you deal with that?”

Snyder responded:

“Yeah, how do you deal with that? And that was kind of… I was super into that concept that, ‘Oh no, Superman can be brought back to life. So now what happens with this?’ And it was that, Lois was like, ‘I’m still in love with Superman. You were kind of a thing.’ But then at that point, Batman had already fallen in love with Lois.”

While it might sound interesting on paper, there’s no guarantee it would’ve worked well on screen.

Certainly, Batman v Superman proved that Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot had an infectious chemistry together. In fact, Gadot showed more heat with Affleck in Batman v Superman than Chris Pine in Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman films.

Without a doubt, nobody would complain if those two got together.
