Zendaya Almost Played Firestar in Spider-Man: No Way Home

Zendaya was discussed to play Firestar in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

In an interview, Zendaya revealed producers nearly turned her into an MCU superhero.

However, neither her nor Tom Holland spilled who it was.

According to sources, it was the mutant Firestar.

In June 2020, I scooped that Firestar was headed to the Spider-Man franchise.

Firestar did not originate in the comics.

Rather, Firestar debuted in the Saturday morning cartoon Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends.

Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends was an early ’80s staple.

In fact, the NBC cartoon introduced an entire generation to the Marvel Universe.

Beginning in 1981, Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends featured guests such as the X-Men, Ghost Rider, and Thor.

Zendaya wasn’t disappointed that the filmmakers decided not to pursue it:

I’m actually really happy with MJ, and the character that she is and that she plays.

Firestar leapt to comics in Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends No. 1.

Interestingly, Firestar’s real name was Angelica Jones.

If they pursued the Firestar angle, MJ’s full name would’ve been Michelle Angelica Jones.

Insiders added that Firestar would’ve made Spider-Man: No Way Home overstuffed.

After all, the focus was on Holland’s Spider-Man and his predecessors.

Is the idea dead, though?

In the TV series, Firestar was college roommates with Spider-Man and Iceman.

Could Zendaya gain powers?

It’d be a clever way of bringing mutants into a Spider-Man movie.

Furthermore, the nostalgic appeal of Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends is strong.

The show is even available for streaming on Disney Plus.

Thus, Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends is easily available to younger generations.

On December 25, I leaked that Firestar could be MJ’s romantic rival.

On the other hand, if Zendaya becomes Firestar, that changes the dynamic.

In addition, it provides a new coat of polish on her relationship with Spider-Man.

Indeed, she doesn’t remember Peter Parker.

Would she fall for another superhero?

In the ’80s, Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends was the closest thing fans had to the MCU.

Although not live action, it featured numerous Marvel superheroes.

Firestar in the College Trilogy brings it full circle, Zendaya or not.
