Sony has a new movie from its Spider-Man universe character trove starring Bad Bunny as El Muerto. Bad Bunny is a wrestler and pop star who now adds acting to his profession in the entertainment industry. His upcoming acting debut project is Bullet Train.

As a wrestler, Bad Bunny has competed in WWE. As a pop star, he is a two-time Grammy Award winner. His El Último Tour Del Mundo won Best Música Urbana Album in 2022 and YHLQMDLG won Best Latin Pop or Urban Album in 2021.

Bad Bunny’s search for the best superhero character match ends with El Muerto. El Muerto is a Latino superhero who hails from a long line of masked wrestlers. The name El Muerto is granted to the one who wears the mask from El Dorado. Juan-Carlos Sanchez is the next in line to be the man behind the El Muerto mask.

Juan Carlos has been trained by his father to be a wrestler ever since he was a child. This is to prepare him for his time to face El Dorado, who has a standing challenge to the sons of their family. When his time came to face El Dorado, he proved he was not worthy of the mask, thus he was not worthy to be the next El Muerto. El Dorado claims the life of those who fail. Juan Carlos’ father fought El Dorado to save his son’s life. Juan’s father died and as tribute to his sacrifice, El Dorado gave Juan ten years to train and prove himself once again.

In order to save himself, El Dorado gave him a new set of conditions. Juan must wrestle, defeat and unmask a masked hero. Ten years later and upon his return, he directed his attention to Spider-Man.

Juan, carrying the name El Muerto, challenged Spider-Man to a match enlisting J. Jonah Jameson’s help for the charity event.

The match between El Muerto and Spider-Man almost led to the web-slinger’s defeat. However, out of instinct and reflex, Spider-Man somehow released a stinger and injected poison paralyzing the wrestler. Spider-Man immediately brings him to medical attention thereby saving his life.

This then equated to El Muerto’s defeat and El Dorado came to claim his life once more. Spider-Man joined forces with Juan to beat El Dorado. Just before they ultimately bring El Dorado down, he manages to escape. This enabled El Muerto to keep the mask as the new wrestler to fully bear the name.

Given the story of the character, it’s no wonder Bad Bunny finds it a fit for his personality. With the plan of Sony to explore the Spider-Man universe, one gets to wonder which character will be next? Will this movie finally actually have a Spider-Man in it?

El Muerto may have a different title. But as these standalone movies go, it’s likely that the title will be the character name itself. Let’s hope that this new dart from Sony hits the target squarely this time. The current release date is January 12, 2024.
