The Amazing Spider-Man 3: Details Emerge On Cancelled Andrew Garfield Sequel

Written by Edwin Francisco

Details have emerged on Andrew Garfield‘s cancelled The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

Andrew Garfield’s third Spider-Man film never pushed through.

After The Amazing Spider-Man 2 fell below expectations, Sony changed course.

Specifically, that’s when Marvel Studios stepped in.

Sony needed assistance.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige took over the character’s movies.

Thus, he started from scratch.

Andrew Garfield’s take on Spider-Man was dropped.

Tom Holland replaced him; moreover, Spider-Man found himself in the MCU.

The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was permanently shelved.

Afterwards, Spider-Man: Homecoming replaced it.

Still, there was unfinished business.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ended with a glimpse of the Sinister Six’ weapons.

Certainly, the Vulture’s wings and Doctor Octopus’ tentacles were the highlights.

The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was in development.

Indeed, Sony was committed to releasing more Spider-Man films.

Critical and fan reaction to Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man movies were mixed.

However, Andrew Garfield’s engaging return in Spider-Man: No Way Home ignited interest.

In other words, people wonder what could’ve been.

Or, more appropriately, What If…?

Director Marc Webb revealed that the films were initially set as a trilogy.

In addition, the Amazing Spider-Man 3 had a release date of June 10, 2016.

The trilogy was the story of Peter Parker’s growth as Spider-Man.

On the other hand, the fourth movie was set to divert the attention to other characters.

It was scheduled for May 4, 2018.

Beyond that, there were spin-off movies for Venom and the Sinister Six.

Because of this is, many actors had small roles.

After all, they were planned to return for bigger parts.

Sony wanted the Spider-Man films to compete directly with Marvel’s own MCU.

They created their own Spider-Verse franchises for the actors to star.

For example, Michael Massee was supposed to reprise his role as Gustav Friers, also known as the Gentleman.

Friers is affiliated with the Sinister Six.

Paul Giamatti played Aleksei Sytsevich in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

He was one of the most-awaited characters.

At the end of that sequel, he transformed into the Rhino.

Alas, we never really saw a proper fight.

Felicity Jones also shot scenes for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

She played the role of Felicity Hardy, also known as the Black Cat.

Dennis Leary, who played George Stacy, told IGN:

Part of the discussion was that possibly in 3, there was this idea, at one point, Spider-Man would be able to take this formula and regenerate the people in his life that had died. So there was this discussion that Captain [George] Stacy would come back even bigger in episode 3.

Marc Webb added more information to Den of Geek:

We were going to freeze his [Norman Osborn] head, and then he was going to be brought back to life. And then there was that character called The Gentleman. We had some notions about how to do it, but I think maybe we were thinking too far ahead when we started building in those things. He was going to come out and lead the Sinister Six. We had talked about Vulture a little bit, too, actually.

Chris Cooper was to become the Green Goblin.

In fact, there was a deleted scene from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 which shows that Oscorp kept Norman Osborn’s head.

The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was also set to tell more of Peter Parker’s father.

Another deleted scene is that of Campbell Scott, who plays Richard Parker.

He’s a scientist who works for Oscorp.

In the movie’s intro, it’s presumed that he and Peter’s mother died sending information.

His appearance at the end of the film was to show that he survived but he’s still in hiding.

Another character that was removed from the movie was Shailene Woodley, who played Mary Jane Watson.

But her scenes were cut because it would have diverted the attention from Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone).

The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was supposed to start the relationship between Peter Parker and MJ.

We may never see how this version of Spider-Man will ever turn out.

The positive thing about this is that some of the concepts were adapted into Holland’s Spider-Man, with Willem Defoe returning as the Green Goblin, as he leads a team against the friendly neighborhood web-slinger.

Nevertheless, nobody can rule out Andrew Garfield returning to complete it.
