Filipina actress Liza Soberano will voice Trese in Netflix’ animated version of the horror graphic novel.
Based on the horror komik co-created by writer Budjette Tan and artist Kajo Baldisimo, Trese combines crime fiction with Philippine folklore.
Specifically, supernatural creatures have infiltrated the mob.
It’s a fresh, compelling premise, uniting local legends with American pulp, filtered through manga influences.
Liza Soberano is among the Philippines’ most popular young actresses.
She is best known for romantic comedies in both regional TV series and movies.
Liza Soberano will do the voice for Alexandra Trese in the Filipino version of Trese in her native Tagalog.
“It’s an honor to be the voice of an iconic character such as Alexandra Trese,” Liza Soberano exclaimed. “I’m a huge fan of Budjette and Kajo’s award-winning Trese comics. Maraming salamat! Excited nako!” (English: “Many thanks! I’m excited!”)
In a statement, executive producer Jay Oliva (The Legend of Korra) explained his affection for the graphic novel:
As a fan of the komiks, I knew that the title role of Alexandra Trese was going to be challenging to cast for the animated series. It is important for the voice talent to embrace the layered character to fully become Alexandra Trese.

In addition to Liza Soberano, Filipina-Canadian actress Shay Mitchell (Pretty Little Liars) will provide Trese’s voice for the English edition.Oliva had praise for both.
My concerns went away as soon as Shay Mitchell stepped into the recording booth. Shay’s Alexandra exceeded my expectations and she delivers a performance of strength, determination and family duty that is at the very core of the character. If that wasn’t enough, imagine my delight when we confirmed Liza Soberano joining the Filipino voice cast! I am a big fan of hers and she fits the character so well. Having Liza play Alexandra Trese for the series makes this project even more special to me and my team!
Trese debuts later this year on Netflix.
