Disney Plus currently does not feature any R-rated content; however, one of their upcoming MCU shows received the equivalent of an R in the Netherlands. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has been given a 16+ in the Netherlands. That is basically the equivalent of an R or a TV-MA in the U.S.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will debut on Disney Plus on March 19, 2021.
Starring Anthony Mackie as the Falcon and Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier, the six-episode series will be a Tom Clancy-esque thriller.
However, the second trailer reveals the influence of ’80s action films as well.
Throughout the ’80s, buddy cop movies like the Lethal Weapon franchise and 48 Hrs. dominated the silver screen.
Most often, they indulged in profanity and gore; in fact, that’s what made many of them so entertaining.
While it’s doubtful The Falcon and the Winter Soldier would reach such extremes, it seems like Disney Plus is going to push the envelope here.
Disney Plus’ The Falcon And The Winter Soldier Will Be Rated R Overseas
The Dutch rating board Kijkwijzer based their decision on the level of violence and foul language on the show.
In the past, Kijkwijzer only gave a 16+ to MCU projects like Daredevil and Jessica Jones.
Both of those series were on Netflix and not Disney Plus, though. They were rated TV-MA in America.
If The Falcon and the Winter Soldier comes close to the brutality of Daredevil, it should stop fans worrying about Moon Knight being toned down.
Nevertheless, The Mandalorian revealed how much violence Disney Plus was willing to allow.
I recently wrote about how Captain America: The Winter Soldier proved you can have a violent picture without an R.
There’s actually a trick to this: Don’t show the blood.
