Thomas Haden Church Addresses Spider-Man 4 Rumours

Thomas Haden Church has revealed that he’s heard rumours of Sam Raimi returning to direct a fourth Spider-Man movie with Tobey Maguire.

For all it’s faults, Sam Raimi’s third Spider-Man film still managed to capture the hearts of fans and is now regarded as a cult classic. For one the sequel retains the same charm that the first two films had with more exhilarating action sequences and fleshed out character development.

In addition, the amount of internet meme’s that have spawned from the infamous ‘Bully Maguire’ scenes have cemented the movie’s place in pop culture history. What ultimately brought the sequel down was due to the constant interference from notorious producer Avi Arad.

Arad wanted Sam Raimi to include Eddie Brock’s Venom in Spider-Man 3 despite the director not being a fan of the character. Raimi wished for Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman and James Franco’s Harry Osborn to be the film’s only villains.

Nonetheless, Sony sided with Arad in the end and forced Raimi to shoehorn Venom and the symbiote storyline into the already crammed movie. As a result, Spider-Man 3 received mixed reviews and Sony opted to cancel the planned fourth instalment that Sam Raimi had already written the script for.

However this wasn’t the end for Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man as he would later return in the MCU film Spider-Man: No Way Home thanks to the Multiverse. Moreover, three of his most iconic foes like Wilhem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock and Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman also returned as three of the movie’s main villains.

Recently, Thomas Haden Church while talking to Comicbook.com revealed that he’s heard rumours of Sam Raimi possibly returning to direct a fourth Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movie. Furthermore, he also expressed interest in returning as Sandman should these rumours turn out to be true.

Church explained:

“There’s always been some kind of… I’ve heard rumors… that Sam Raimi was going to do another Spider-Man movie with Tobey Maguire and if that happens, I would probably campaign to maybe at least do a cameo.”

While this does sound exciting, it’s highly unlikely to be true given that this rumour originated from the internet. Nevertheless, this doesn’t necessarily rule out the possibility of the actor reprising his role in Avengers: Secret Wars.
