New Republic movie will reportedly utilise multiple characters from all Star Wars media including comics, books and video games.

There’s a lot of excitement among Star Wars fans right now following the announcement of three new upcoming movies. Each respective film will be set within different eras of the canonical timeline.

One set before the prequels that’ll tell the story of the first Jedi and the creation of the order. Another set after the sequels which will continue Rey’s story as she builds her own Jedi academy.

The last will take place during the New Republic era where The Mandalorian also takes place. This upcoming movie will adapt the fan favourite Legends storyline, Heir To The Empire.

In addition, it’ll serve as a culmination for many of the Star Wars Disney Plus series. Moreover, legendary Star Wars producer Dave Filoni will serve as the movie’s director.

Filoni has played instrumental role in expanding the Star Wars universe across television. Despite having worked on the animated shows and the Disney Plus series, Filoni’s never been directly involved with the films.

Nonetheless, he’s finally been given the opportunity to direct his own movie in the iconic sci-fi saga. Furthermore, the New Republic movie might just be the most important of the three upcoming films.

Recent interviews with Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni suggests that the movie will bring together characters from all media forms. Outside film and television, the Star Wars universe is further expanded through comics, books, novels and video games.

It’s possible that certain characters introduced via these platforms could show up in the New Republic film. Even some who appear in the now non-canonical Star Wars Legends stories.

Whilst talking to Dagobah Dispatch, Jon Favreau teased this. Explaining how the larger multimedia reach of Star Wars influenced him, Favreau said:

“When I was younger, we didn’t have movies, but there were comic books, there were novels, things that are encompassed in the expanded universe or Legends,” Favreau said. “Clearly, there are decisions that have to be made to fit it all together… For us, I think one thing we’re in agreement about is that the characters — as special as they are — the story has to drive what characters are.” Favreau said, later adding, “As we are getting deeper and deeper into this, you start to have to really map things out and figure out what that story is, and then have those characters fulfill what their growth cycle is and what their mythic hero’s journey is. Those things have to fit together well. Otherwise, it won’t feel like Star Wars. That’s always been George’s base. He’s a student of Joseph Campbell. How does it fit into the narrative that has the hero’s journey? And so as we have more and more characters line up, you have to figure out how those characters are arcing and if it feels ultimately like a Star Wars story.”
