The Cancelled Stargirl Might Have Future In The DCU

Written by Joy Lyn Parohinog Francisco

The cancelled Stargirl may find its way into the DCU. Well, the character anyway. Sources reveal that Stargirl could appear with the Justice Society on the silver screen. On the other hand, they’ll likely recast her for the DCU. As for the CW show, series creator Geoff Johns is already aware of its demise and was able to deliver the third season with closure in mind.

Writer Johns, together with artist Lee Moder, created Stargirl for DC Comics. Her name is Courtney Whitmore, who is a high school gymnast moving to Blue Valley with her mom and stepfather. Johns modeled her after his 18-year-old sister Courtney. She tragically died in the TWA Flight 800 explosion in 1996.

In the comics, she first appeared as the second Star-Spangled Kid then assumed the name Stargirl after receiving the Cosmic Staff.

The show starring Brec Bassinger is not the first live-action appearance of Stargirl on the small screen. The character already appeared in Smallville where actress Britt Irvin took on the role. Then Sarah Grey became the character for Legends of Tomorrow.

Critical response for the CW’s Stargirl is certified fresh in Rotten Tomatoes. For the first season, it got 89% and then 100% for the second season. Audience ratings aren’t also bad from 67% in the first season to 83% in the second season. The third season is currently running and the site maintains an audience rating of 83%.

Needless to say, these numbers do not affect the CW’s new owner Nexstar’s decision to discontinue the series. Nevertheless, Geoff Johns will still be able to give the story a proper conclusion. As cited in Collider, Johns said:

Stargirl has always held a special place in my heart for many reasons. With all the brewing changes at the network, we were aware this was possibly the last season, so we wrote with that in mind and have delivered what I believe to be the best season of Stargirl yet, with complete creative closure. The cast and crew are extraordinary, and I’d like to thank them for helping me bring this series to life. Brec embodied Courtney in every way possible — with grace, strength and humor — exceeding my wildest expectations.

I am grateful to WBTV and The CW for giving us a home to tell this story and to honor my beloved late sister, and I’m beyond thankful to the press and fans who have always championed us for three amazing seasons. Most series never get this far. We couldn’t be more proud of our show and the fan community it’s built.

Bassinger shared photos of her as Stargirl on her Instagram account with a caption thanking everyone who is part of her journey as Whitmore. More than a farewell message she also shared that the final season had shot two endings. Finally, she promises viewers that the best of the series is yet to come. A part of her post reads:

Thank you to every single individual that has supported our show. It means the world to me. Stargirl believes in destiny, so as I sit here, I have to fall back on that. Everything happens for a reason and I am so grateful for every moment. 💛💫

PS With the unknown future, Geoff wanted to protect the end of our show and shot two endings. So please, if you have watched Stargirl, don’t let this deviate you from continuing – some of the best stuff has yet to come…

Xo.

Stargirl’s story is likely not over. The DCU can pick up the pieces.
