The Batman 2 Avoids Crashing Into Latest DCU Reboot

The Batman 2 will not take place in the DCU, according to YouTube personality Syl Abdul. Granted, this shouldn’t be even in question. However, rumors circulated in December that DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn sought Robert Pattinson’s Batman for his DCU reboot.

Of course, Gunn debunked it. At this point that’s probably the first thing he does in the office. However, that’s what happens when time passes and there are no DCU updates. Gunn began working in November and the mysterious DCU slate continues to spawn gossip. Speculation. Bat-Mite nightmares. Images of Peacemaker dancing with more dark vigilantes.

On the other hand, that should end today when Gunn’s DCU plans go public. But is it a king’s feast or Pandora’s box? By the time you read this, the answer is probably scorching social media. Good or bad, the fans will respond.

In any case, Gunn’s denials in December should have ended the chatter. Not quite. Followers became concerned that Peacemaker would drop fart jokes in The Batman 2. What happened next didn’t ease worries. In fact, the farts got louder.

In January, The Batman director Matt Reeves revealed he was meeting with Gunn. Uh oh. Cue loud flatulence. Reeves said:

“I had this dream for the way I wanted that to play out and that’s part of what I’m going to be talking to them about in a few weeks. They’re going to be talking to me about what they’re doing in their ten-year plan or certainly what’s in the near future as well so that we can understand that we’re not—it’s air traffic control—we don’t want to be crashing into each other. We want to support each other. I’m super excited. I’m really excited to hear about what they’re doing and to be working with them. It’s going to be cool.”

On the surface, he sounded positive. Nothing to see here. Move along now. But then you notice Reeves claimed, “we don’t want to be crashing into each other.” Wait, what does that mean? Since The Batman 2 only exists in Reeves’ pocket universe, why would there be a collision? Was Reeves going to use Bat-Mite, too?

From my perspective, it sounds like Reeves was warning Gunn to get off his lawn. In public, too. Reeves wanted some Gunn control. It’s hard to believe DC Studios didn’t consider the idea. After all, they have a Batman problem.

Michael Keaton, at 71, is too old for Gunn’s young guns makeover. So is Ben Affleck at 50. Gunn apparently wants to cast CW (or perhaps younger) age actors. True, Pattinson is no kid at 36. Still, another Dark Knight is yet another Batman Begins. Didn’t we just have (an inferior) one with The Batman?

Sigh.

Still, Reeves beamed with optimism. He stated:

“They [Gunn and Safran] have been great. […] We’re actually supposed to meet in the next few weeks because they want to talk to me about the broad plan, and then they want to hear the BatVerse plan. We’re just getting together to talk about all of that. Look, I’m excited to hear what they’re going to do. The BatVerse thing, as James has said, and as Peter has said, is kind of its own thing they’re letting us do.

It seems like the meeting did go Reeves’ way. On Twitter, Abdul said The Batman 2 (and that franchise) is “Separate from DCU as intended.”

Therefore, Reeves keeps his own sandbox. Pattinson won’t join the next Justice League. And there’s no friendship with the next Superman. The Batman movies stay grounded.

No fart jokes? Right now, let’s hope the other new DCU movies don’t smell.
