Scarlett Johansson Not Done as Black Widow

Scarlett Johansson’s time as Black Widow probably isn’t over with her first solo movie.

After over a year of delays due to the pandemic, Black Widow is finally set to be simultaneously released in cinemas and on Disney Plus on July 9.

It brings the MCU back to the theaters; moreover, it sets the stage for new heroes and villains for the future of the franchise.

One of those heroes will be Yelena Belova.

Up and coming English actress Florence Pugh stars alongside Scarlett Johansson in her long-awaited movie.

Some speculate it will be Scarlett Johansson’s MCU swan song.

Pugh will reprise the role in Jeremy Renner’s upcoming Disney Plus series Hawkeye.

Total Film interviewed both stars for their latest issue.

Johansson praised her co-star.

Furthermore, she revealed the audience reaction to Pugh’s character and her performance during the test screenings for the film, saying:

She has a really beautiful career ahead of her. She’s a very special person. Her character and her performance is so beloved.

Pugh addressed rumors of becoming the MCU’s new Black Widow.

The magazine asked Pugh about whether or not there was any truth to her character inheriting the Black Widow moniker in the film.

Pugh delivered a response that’s open to interpretation:

Even though that’s obviously where everybody wants to go and wants to think about – to think about what’s next – this film never really felt like that was what it was trying to underline.

This indicates that the film will focus more on the lead up to Natasha Romanoff’s sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame.

But will it wrap up the character’s story?

Insiders claimed that Scarlett Johansson is most likely not finished yet as Black Widow:

Marketing Black Widow as Scarlett Johansson’s final bow in the MCU triggers social media and the box office. Obviously, Pugh will be Black Widow in the future. But I’m told Johansson will return in a post-Endgame time frame; what project that is remains to be seen.

Interestingly in Avengers: Infinity War, Natasha is seen wearing the same green vest that Yelena Belova wears in Black Widow.

That leads to theories that the character would not survive in the upcoming film.

Nevertheless, given that Pugh is set to return as Belova in Hawkeye, set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

It’s definite that the MCU’s next Black Widow going forward will be Yelena Belova.

But don’t say goodbye to Scarlett Johansson yet.

An insider added:

Pugh hasn’t proved herself at the box office yet. They all know Johansson is bank. Did they really wait all this time to reward her with a solo franchise but then take it away after the first?
