Rumored China Release Date for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is rumored for a September 23 release in China.

The MCU’s first Asian superhero movie smashed box-office expectations twice in the U.S.; a China could put it over the top.

Prior to its release, Disney detractors clawed the Internet with a barrage of fake news announcing its demise. The word “Flop” littered the disinformation highway.

None of it was accurate.

After the box-office results poured in, actor Simu Liu poked fun at the bogus projections on social media.

Politically and/or racially motivated reports scoffed that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ weekend gross was like Ant-Man and the Wasp‘s $75.8 million from 2018.

In other words, it’s among the MCU’s lower debuts.

Of course, placing the global pandemic in this context would derail their argument so it’s conveniently ignored.

Furthermore, the reality is that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings earned a massive $94.67 million in its first four days.

In pre-COVID days, that’d be considered a huge success.

Before Shang-Chi was shown in the theaters, there wasn’t agreement on how it would perform.

Box-office analysts predicted $45-$60 million for its opening weekend.

However, it did seem to have an advantage compared to Marvel Studios’ previous movie, Black Widow.

Black Widow was released in theaters and on Disney Plus simultaneously.

When glowing initial reviews of the film came out, that seemed soft.

Projections were then adjusted upward as the film trended higher.

Moreover, box-office experts shifted to $90 million during Labor Day weekend.

Then it surpassed that with $94.67 million.

For a movie that had a budget of only $150 million, this has been a very good weekend opening.

There are several factors for Shang-Chi‘s success.

We can’t deny that because the film is not available on streaming; the only way to watch the movie is going to the theaters.

Shang-Chi is scheduled to be released on Disney Plus after 45 days from its theatrical release.

This will give some weeks for moviegoers to come back to the theaters and have repeat viewings.

Because of its theatrical exclusivity, it is expected to steadily keep the box-office sales up and possibly a little higher than Black Widow’s performance in the coming weeks.

Even though the movie stars Simu Liu, for the Asian market the real heavy hitters here are Tony Leung, Fala Chen, and Michelle Yeoh.

They are very well-recognized in China, and their roles in the film are significant to the plot.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is expected to open in other countries.

The movie is rumored to be shown in China beginning September 23.

Nevertheless, we have no confirmation if this is accurate.

If it is, we can expect that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to push it further up the ticket-sales rank.

With the success of Shang-Chi, it seems that the future of MCU will now be more diverse.

One can only imagine with a good amount of hope that more Asian Marvel heroes will be seen in the future, and who knows? It may have already begun ATLASt (see what we did there?).
