Review: Avengers: Infinity War S.H.Figuarts Doctor Strange (Battle on Titan Edition) Figure

Bandai S. H. Figuarts makes magic with this amazing Avengers: Infinity War Battle on Titan edition of the master of the mystic arts: Doctor Strange.

Stephen Strange was a world renowned surgeon, dazzling the medical society with his superior surgical skills and knowledge, until the day it was taken from him.

Badly injured in an automobile accident which left his hands crippled, Strange exhausted all possibilities that Western medicine held and journeyed to Kamar-Taj, in search of the Ancient One, hoping for some miracle healing.

Rather than simply being healed, Strange became a student of the Ancient One and discovered the mystic arts.

Strange, thanks to his keen intellect and an unrealized natural talent took to the training quickly, eventually battling and defeating Dormammu and becoming Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme.

Tasked with protecting our realm, Strange is keeper of the powerful mystical artifact, the Eye of Agamotto, which we learn contains the Time Stone, one of the fabled Infinity Stones.

When Thanos invades Earth, in search of the Infinity Stones, Dr. Strange, Wong, Iron Man, and Bruce Banner are attacked by Cull Obsidian and Ebony Maw.

Frustrated by Strange’s tenacious defense of the Time Stone, Maw ultimately renders the Sorcerer unconscious and abducts him.

Unbeknownst to Maw, though, both Spider-Man and Iron Man are able to stow aboard his Q Ship, defeat Maw and rescue Strange.

The three heroes then encounter the Guardians of the Galaxy as the ship is programmed to return to Titan.

On this desolate, destroyed world, Dr. Strange, using the time stone views all 14,000,605 possible outcomes to their conflict with Thanos.

After a pitched battle with Thanos and realizing they only have one path to victory, Dr. Strange willingly gives Thanos the Time Stone to save Iron Man’s life.

Thanos withdraws and heads to Earth to successfully collect the sole remaining stone and with a simple snap of his fingers, eradicates half the life in the universe, including Dr. Strange.

The Guardians and Spider-Man, leaving Iron Man and Nebula stranded on Titan.

The Bandai SHFiguarts Battle on Titan Dr. Strange gobsmacked me with the astounding assortment of accessories! (Say that five times fast, why don’tcha!)

Dr. Strange comes with:

  • A clear plastic Portal background accessory,
  • 4 green “time power” accessories to fit on his forearms,
  • one green “time spell” disc that ports onto one of his hands,
  • one orange “shield spell” disc that can port onto his hand,
  • four orange “shield spell” accessories that fit on his forearms,
  • a green “time power” accessory that ports onto his chest,
  • an orange mystical sword, EIGHT pairs of hands: 1 pr open action, 1pr fists, 2 pr spell casting, 1 pr open relaxed, one pr fisted/accessory holding, 1 pr relaxed, 1 pr open action with pegs, and a single hand with the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak spell projecting forth,
  • two head sculpts (eyes open, eyes closed)
  • and the detachable Eye of Agamotto, which ports on his chest.

I believe this has to have the most accessories of any figure I’ve ever purchased and I freaking love it!

All seventeen hands are sculpted precisely and the paint appliques are consistent throughout.

I really love the ease with which you can change the hands on this figure.

The Crimson Bands are detailed in a translucent red and look gorgeous.

They are fairly pliable, but are not meant to be posed, unfortunately.

The orange cast on the spell accessories is also translucent and looks very, very nice when attached to the figure, as do the green time stone effects.

My only real issue is with the two plastic discs that peg onto his hands.

For one, they are somewhat cloudy, so it renders a degree of opacity to them which negates the desired effect.

For two, the holes in the center are smaller than the pegs on the hands so mine pop off fairly easy.

To that end, I simply removed his hands and then pegged them back into his arms, through the holes in the center of each disk.

Granted that defeats the purpose of the effect as they are designed to look as if they are emanating from his hands, but I kinda like it.

I will admit to being more of a Mafex fan, BUT that being said, SHF really knows how to pack the goodies with their figures!

The Bandai SHFiguarts Dr. Strange Battle on Titan edition simply looks amazing.

I am so enthralled by this figure’s appearance, that I found myself sitting and turning it over and over to study it, when I should have been taking pictures.

This is a highly detailed figure with some intricate sculpting and design work. Dr. Strange’s two head sculpts are incredibly well done and give Hot Toys a run for their money in matching his look from the movies.

The paint detail on both my sculpts was painstakingly applied and gives such a lifelike appearance… its just awesome.

My biggest gripe though… are the green highlights in his hair.

They are really difficult to notice until you start looking very closely and then you realize his hair has the same color as a really bad bowel movement.

Dr. Shart strikes!!! (Yes, I couldn’t help mixing in a little pooh joke.)

However, the grey highlights at his temples are very well done and applied in such a manner as to not overpower the look of the figure.

The upper part of his cloak is rubber and affixed to his body, while the actual cloak itself is soft goods and…using a phrase coined by our good friend Sylabdul on his show… is definitely “Cape Porn.”

The cape is affixed to his back on a hinge mechanism, uses two different fabrics with incredible detail on each and has bendy wires on all three sides of the cape.

This allows for cape posing unlike anything I’ve ever seen previously.

This cape easily beats the Mafex Dark Knight Returns Batman cape in terms of action posing and innovation.

His blue outer cloak is superbly detailed with different shades of blue, black shading, lighter blue for the trim and wrist bands and the underside of the coat.

This is just amazing.

His pants and boots are highly detailed and painted very accurately.

The gold trim on his cloak and the Eye amulet are restrained but eye-catching and his leather waist wrapping has beautiful silver trim details as well as intricately sculpted stitching detail.

This is definitely one of those figures that it’s as much fun to look at as it is to play around with.

I cannot say enough good things about what a well done figure this is, in terms of appearance, design, paint applications, and sculpting.

Bandai SHFiguarts has always done an amazing job articulating their figures, however, this might be the one time where the figure design actually limits and defeats the incredible articulation.

Dr. Strange’s head and neck both feature side to side movement, but because of the high collar to his cloak, is limited in upward looking ability.

With both head and neck moving, he can look down well enough.

The shoulders have a really nice butterfly, allowing for forward and backward swing.

The arms can rotate 360 degrees and have a hidden bicep swivel.

His elbows are single jointed, but bend in very nicely, greater than 90 degrees.

All hands hinge and swivel. Dr. Strange has a decent enough diaphragm ball, which allows for pivoting, swivel, and forward, back crunch.

Be warned though, if you bend too far forward, the Eye of Agamotto can catch on his belt and pop off.

Trust me… you DON’T want to be on all fours trying to find this thing in your carpet!

His legs can do fairly amazing splits, swivel to a degree and kick forward… provided you move the bottom of his robes.

This is the second biggest hindrance to articulation on the figure as the robes are pliable, but do tend to restrict leg movement fairly significantly.

His knees will bend in deeply, but again, the robes will interfere to a degree.

The biggest articulation problem I’ve had and seen in other reviews is with the ankles.

They move upward, have toe articulation, and can pivot.

However, they cannot move downward as the hinge ends abruptly at the back of the foot and have NO ankle rocker motion to speak of.

This was very disappointing when I was posing him around and trying to get some dramatic leaping/flying poses.

On the whole though, for it’s design, the figure functions passably and to be honest, the appearance and accessories really make up for a lot!

Overall, I absolutely love the Bandai SHFiguarts Avengers Infinity War Battle on Titan edition Dr. Strange figure.

Being an import, he is a fairly pricey figure, however I did get him on sale, but even at the price point of the $80 I paid, this figure is so well worth it.

Articulation issues aside, I’m giving this Dr. Strange a solid 4.5 out of 5 toyboxes!

You can find a great line of Bandai SHFiguarts figures at the Big Bad Toy Store.

Thanks for checking out the toybox and, until next time… Geek Out!
