Report: Squirrel Girl Series In Development For Disney Plus

Written by Edwin Francisco

Squirrel Girl might be moving forward in Disney Plus as a developing series after years in limbo.

For some time, we have heard that Squirrel Girl should have a TV series in 2017. Originally, the show would adapt the New Warriors comic book, and it stars the titular character. It would have even been part of the MCU if it pushed through. The series would be part of Marvel Television which had made shows like Netflix’s Daredevil, Hulu’s Legion and Fox’s The Gifted. In fact, they made a pilot starring AT&T’s Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl and Derek Theler (American Gods) as Mr. Immortal.

Various sites reported that it caught the interest of Disney and Marvel, and they wanted its release in 2018 with 10 episodes. Unfortunately, this didn’t push through and by 2019, everyone involved considered the project canceled. In truth, the company canceled all Marvel Television projects. At that point, Marvel and Disney had other plans. Thus, they shut down Marvel Television. From then on, Marvel Studios started taking over the TV shows.

Because of that, well, goodbye Squirrel Girl.

But wait. According to Small Screen, a Squirrel Girl program for Disney Plus is now in early development. Although there are very few details about this as of now.

So far, the plan is to release the Squirrel Girl series as part of Phase Seven. Which means it will be sometime after the events of Avengers: Secret Wars (2026). More importantly, this is the first time we heard that Phase Seven is already being planned out, which is not really a surprise. But we haven’t really heard even half of the plans for Phase Six. Take note, there are still a handful of dates on that slate that isn’t with a specific title yet.

Even though Marvel Studios plans the Squirrel Girl series for Phase Seven, they might still decide to shift it to Phase Six if everything goes to plan.

Historically, Squirrel Girl first appeared in Marvel Super-Heroes No. 8 in 1991. Marvel Comics first introduced her as a mutant who has the power to communicate with squirrels. Due to her mutation, she has superhuman strength, enhanced night vision and accelerated healing. Furthermore, she even has a large three-foot squirrel tail. Strangely, her mutant status changed when there was an issue between Fox and Marvel. Currently, Marvel labels her as a “mutate.” In other words, kind of a mutant, but she was not born with it. Similar to Spider-Man or the Hulk. The source of her powers is unknown. The character’s creators are writer Will Murray and artist Steve Ditko.

Nevertheless, the Disney Plus show could bring her back to her original mutant status. Marvel Studios has shown that they want mutants in the MCU. So much so that, they already changed the origin of one character, Ms. Marvel. She was originally an Inhuman in the comics, but she was made into a mutant in the MCU. And, since the comics didn’t even bother revealing the source of Squirrel Girl’s powers, Marvel Studios could ignore that detail of not being a mutant if they want to.

Will Marvel Studios bring back Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl? Fans never saw the New Warriors pilot. Marvel Studios recast Mr. Immortal with David Pasquesi in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
