Pinay Actress Kate Valdez Becomes Horror Superhero In U.S. Comic Dream Walker

Written By Geekosity Staff

Philippine actress Kate Valdez is now a comic-book superhero in Dream Walker. Geekosity Editor-in-Chief Mikey Sutton wrote the horror comic. Filipino artist Noel Layon Flores drew the book.

Sutton initially announced Dream Walker in 2019.

At the time, the comic had no title.

In fact, there was only a premise.

Dream Walker is a Pinay supernatural vlogger named Kat.

In the beginning, Kat is the only survivor in a violent bus crash.

Afterwards, she discovers she has the ability to enter anyone’s dreams.

Furthermore, she can steal objects from them.

But once the person awakes, they disappear.

Kat uses them to fight demons and monsters in the Philippines.

Everything from ancient Filipino weapons to chainsaws are at her disposal.

That is, if someone is dreaming of them.

As a child, Sutton was inspired by Green Lantern.

In fact, he sees comparisons between Green Lantern and Dream Walker.

He explained:

Green Lantern powered his ring with his imagination. He created everything with it. Likewise, anything is possible when Kat is inside a dream.

Sutton began reading and collecting comic books in 1978.

The first comic he ever bought was Master of Kung Fu No. 68.

Although he wrote for comics magazines like Amazing Heroes in the early ’90s, he’s never written one.

Until now.

Second Skin Comics just released Dream Walker No. 1.

It’s on sale at their website.

Sutton discovered Kate Valdez while he recovered from a stroke in November 2018.

His mother watched a Pinoy soap opera called Onanay.

The GMA Network series co-starred Kate Valdez.

Sutton was mesmerized.

He said:

I was like, who’s that beautiful lady? I quickly posted her picture on my Facebook page.

Within an hour, a Facebook friend messaged Sutton.

It was Flores.

Sutton had no idea Flores was the Lead Visual Designer of Encantadia.

GMA’s 2016 fantasy TV show also featured Kate Valdez.

Thus, Flores helped Sutton get into contact with Kate Valdez.

Sutton explained:

I wanted to interview her for a website I had back then. But the more I watched Onanay, I realized she could be the protagonist of my comic book.

Back then, Sutton planned Dream Walker to be a shōjo comedy.

Sutton was a huge fan of manga icon Rumiko Takahashi.

However, he couldn’t make it work.

Sutton revealed:

It wasn’t funny.

But while talking to Kate Valdez on the phone, she recommended a Netflix series to him.

It was Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

It hooked Sutton.

Sutton said:

I turned the idea into horror. I finished the script in a week.

Dream Walker is steeped in Philippine myths and folklore.

Sutton is half-Filipino.

He admitted:

There’s much of my childhood in Dream Walker.
