Mindhunter Netflix and David Fincher In Talks for Season Three

David Fincher and Netflix are in talks to continue the acclaimed series Mindhunter for a third season.

Mindhunter is a popular psychological crime thriller from Netflix; however, it was last released on August 16, 2019.

It has been more than a year since then.

We’ve been led to believe that the show has ended.

In fact, stars of the show Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv were released from their contracts back in January 2020.

It was quite concerning.

Mindhunter was put on “indefinite hold.”

It’s a surprise to see a show this good yanked.

Furthermore, it grabbed high ratings across the board.

Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 97% from critics and 95% from the audience.

Regardless of its quality, it doesn’t mean that it has enough of an audience to keep it going.

Fincher is known for such highly praised cinema like Seven, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and The Social Network.

He has been the executive producer of Mindhunter.

He directed seven out of the 19 episodes; in other words, he is the de facto showrunner.

Fincher explained the series’ difficulties in a Vulture interview.

Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was a very expensive show,

Fincher stated.

We talked about, ‘Finish Mank and then see how you feel,’ but I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic — dollars have to equal eyeballs.

He added that

It’s a 90-hour workweek. It absorbs everything in your life. When I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, ‘I don’t know if I have it in me right now to break season three.

It seems that the situation was not on Mindhunter’s side.

Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos and VP for original content Cindy Holland didn’t argue with Fincher about his decision to stop the show.

But they wanted him to keep on working with them by giving him the choice of what project to work on.

It’s obvious that Netflix really likes working with Fincher.

That is why Netflix is still open to making the third season.

After a year of no news about the series, a source from Edward Lauder’s Small Screen revealed,

All I can really tell you about Mindhunter is that conversations between Netflix and Fincher are ongoing. They are discussing the possibility of bringing the show back for a third season. It’s still very early days, but Fincher sounds more upbeat about the project.

Fincher and Netflix are talking.

This gives us hope since Fincher is “more upbeat” compared to being “pretty exhausted.”

It seems that Fincher just needed some time off from the production of Mindhunter.

We have no idea at this time if they will push through with a third season since they may still need to figure out the budget.

After all, that was one of the issues Fincher mentioned. Nevertheless, it’s good to know that Netflix has open doors for Fincher if they decide to give the series life again.
