Michael B Jordan’s Live-Action Static Shock Film Remains Alive At WB

Written by Edwin Francisco

Michael B Jordan’s live-action Static Shock film is still a go. Nikolas Draper-Ivery, the co-writer and artist of DC Comics’ Static: Shadows of Dakota, assures fans that the movie isn’t shelved.

For a couple of years now, fans have been patiently waiting for updates of the Static Shock film. They made the announcement back in 2020 in the DC FanDome event. Furthermore, DC CCO Jim Lee himself presented it. He was with Phil LaMarr and director Reginald Hudlin when they made the announcement. Phil LaMarr lent his voice to the animated version of the character years ago.

Updates about the movie have been slow, but at least there were. Marvel’s Killmonger, Michael B. Jordan, joined the production as a producer through his Outlier Society in October 2020. And in March 2021, Randy McKinnon (Grand Army) got onboard to write the script.

Then the Warner-Discovery merger happened.

Fans speculate that this made the progress of the film slow further down. Not only on Static Shock but on several projects as well. Once the new Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav came into the leadership, the company canceled several DC shows and movies. To name a few, they axed The Wonder Twins, Batgirl, J.J. Abrams’ Constantine, and possibly more. Of course, Static Shock is under Warner, so, it’s natural for fans to get worried.

Draper-Ivery explained that things are happening. He said in a Twitter post:

Stop speculating about the Static movie. Don’t worry about those articles and be patient. I will not elaborate on this any further.

He even followed it up with a scene from Parks and Recreation with Ron Swanson simply saying:

I know more than you.

In other words, Static Shock is in the cards. And we will know when things get more concrete. However, development continues. As for now, we all just have to wait.

Static Shock is from the DC/Milestone comic book Static. The comic book had its original release in 1993. Even though this is from DC Comics, Static was originally to be separate from the DC Universe. They named the separate universe as the Dakotaverse. Nevertheless, it did eventually merge at some point in DC’s history.

A cartoon under the name Static Shock on Kids WB aired in September 2000. It lasted four years before the company canceled it. Later, Static also appeared in other shows like Batman Beyond, Justice League Unlimited and Young Justice.

At one point, there was a plan to make a live-action show with Jaden Smith (After Earth) as the lead character. But this never materialized.

With Static’s popularity, there is no question why people want to see the character on the silver screen. For now, we have to take Draper-Ivery’s words. It’s unknown if Michael B. Jordan will also appear in Static Shock.
