Meet Disney Plus’ Ms. Marvel: The MCU’s First Muslim Superhero

When Disney Plus debuts Ms. Marvel, they’ll make history; she is the MCU’s first Muslim superhero.

Disney announced Ms. Marvel at the D23 Expo in August 2019.

Moreover, they cast unknown actress Iman Vellani  in the lead role the following year.

Ms. Marvel is part of the MCU’s Phase Four.

Originally for 2021, Disney rescheduled Ms. Marvel for 2022.

Nevertheless, this is not bad news.

A push into 2022 means avoiding clashes.

Namely, it won’t compete with Disney Plus heavyweights like Hawkeye and The Book of Boba Fett.

In addition, Disney releases Ms. Marvel the same year as the Captain Marvel sequel.

Now entitled The Marvels, Vellani will co-star.

But who is Ms. Marvel?

Ms. Marvel is Kamala Khan.

Specifically, she is a 16-year-old Muslim Pakistani-American who lives in Jersey City.

At first, Khan is an ordinary teenage girl.

She writes superhero fan fiction.

In addition, Ms. Marvel joins a new generation of MCU superheroes for Phase Four.

Like Shang-Chi and the Eternals, Ms. Marvel adds diversity to the MCU.

Thus, Ms. Marvel is groundbreaking.

Phase Four sets up a new roster of characters that reflect the world.

Likewise, Marvel Universe co-creator Stan Lee accomplished this in the comics.

After all, Lee and artist Jack Kirby introduced the first Black superhero, Black Panther, in 1966.

At the same time, Phase Four honors the old while nourishing the new.

The original Avengers left their mark. Ms. Marvel is just the beginning of what’s next.

In particular, Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) carries Hawkeye’s legacy on Disney Plus.

We cannot forget Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and his mentor Iron Man.

In fact, Khan’s idol is Captain Marvel (Brie Larson).

Yet Vellani has been quiet about her role.

She wants Ms. Marvel to do the talking for her.

The show is promised to show who she is.

So, what will this Ms. Marvel be like?

The comic book depicted her as a shape-shifter.

This is a result of the Inhumans.

Right now, there are no Inhumans in the MCU. (The Inhumans TV program wasn’t canon.)

Disney Plus portrays Ms. Marvel differently this time.

Some promo art has helped us theorize how.

It looks like a Green Lantern-styled approach. As a result, fans questioned this creative decision.

Still, the departure from the comics is intriguing. The first season will consist of six episodes.

We have word of who will be directing.

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah will direct episodes one and six.

Meera Menon has one episode under her belt.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has episode four and five plus one more.

Furthermore, Freddy Syborn serves as the writer.

What if…?’s A.C. Bradley is consultant and writer.

Disney Plus has been smart about their planned releases.

COVID-19 caused delays, affecting release dates.

In spite of it, Marvel Studios stood strong.

No matter what, the MCU rises above.

Thus, this is good news for fans everywhere.

Meanwhile, these shows and films help us cope.

In times like these, film and TV serve as a beacon of joy and hope.
