Matt Reeves’ Upcoming Projects Have No DCEU Connections

Director Matt Reeves‘ new film and TV deal with Warner Bros Discovery thus far doesn’t include any projects set in the DCEU. Although that could change, insiders said Matt Reeves’ Batman-related projects remain in his sandbox. In other words, they won’t cross over anywhere else.

The media hyped Matt Reeves’ latest agreement. However, sources explain he’ll play a small role in the studio’s 10-year plan for DC Films. Furthermore, none of Reeves’ upcoming movies or TV series are guaranteed.

With Warner Bros. Discovery canceling several shows, nothing is safe until CEO David Zaslav says it’s safe. There was even worry that Reeves’ The Batman 2 could be the next one to get the axe. Not only that, but Reeves’ highly ambitious animated Batman: Caped Crusader for HBO Max didn’t get the go signal.

In addition, Warner Bros. Discovery has yet to give The Batman 2 its greenlight. Nevertheless, it’s getting close to becoming a reality. Not only that, but his Batman spin-off The Penguin will push through. And The Penguin seems to have made some interesting plans.

Colin Farrell played The Penguin in The Batman, and he did amazingly well. Other than the makeup looks incredible, Farrell’s acting and voice work was also unrecognizable. He was so impressive that they planned a Penguin spin-off early on even though The Batman wasn’t out yet. Reeves was excited to get things started on the spin-off as soon as The Batman was done. But of course, many things were up in the air ever since the Warner Bros-Discovery merger.

Giant Freakin Robot reported that The Penguin might introduce classic Batman villains. And based on their report, we might be able to see the Joker and Scarecrow. The Batman introduced us to classic villains like the Penguin, the Riddler and Catwoman. On the contrary, they may not be the only versions of these characters in the near future. After all, this isn’t the DCEU.

The DCEU could produce their own.

Reeves’ Batman universe feels as grounded as Christopher Nolan’s. But Reeve’s version focuses on darker villains. While Nolan’s Joker was pure genius on Heath Ledger’s portrayal, Reeves’ interpretation of The Riddler reminds me of more psychotic villains like John Doe from the movie Se7en.

Although Barry Keoghan portrayed the Joker, we didn’t really see him. The movie did not even have a time when any character mentioned Joker’s name. We only knew that he was the Joker because of casting information, especially when the production released the deleted scene. But based on the blurry video of Keoghan’s interpretation, it seems that the Joker is very scarred. Very prominent scars at that. We just don’t know how extensive his scars are. But since we never really saw the character, the Joker’s depiction could still change.

Now the Scarecrow is another interesting Batman villain. The Scarecrow in the comics can look very weird and sometimes ridiculous. Heck, he just looks like a character in The Wizard of Oz. But Nolan did show a more realistic version of the psychotic doctor. And Nolan’s version made a lot of sense. But we do wonder what Reeves’ version will turn out.
