Marvel Studios has apparently cast Javier Bardem, and it could be as X-Men villain Mister Sinister. According to a new report, Marvel Studios has landed an Oscar winner for their X-Men reboot.

In 2008, Javier Bardem became the first Spanish actor to win an Academy Award. He took the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for No Country for Old Men. With that acclaimed film, Javier Bardem solidified himself for bad guy roles. Without a doubt, Marvel Studios paid attention.

When Fox still owned the X-Men’s cinematic rights, they developed Mister Sinister for their franchise. In fact, they teased him in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, The New Mutants, and Deadpool 2. Mad Men‘s Jon Hamm even acknowledged he was in talks for the role. Nevertheless, it never went beyond that. Hamm explained:

I never shot anything. I remember having a conversation with people: I’m a huge comic book fan, especially of the X-Men and The New Mutants, so I was excited to be considered. But these conversations happen and then life intervenes.

Thus, Mister Sinister never appeared. Disney acquired Fox before any of that materialized.

Still, Mister Sinister already gained a following on X-Men: The Animated Series in the ’90s. In addition, Wolverine and the X-Men included him as well.

Writer Chris Claremont created Mister Sinister. He debuted in The Uncanny X-Men No. 221 in 1987. In other words, he has long roots in Marvel Comics.

Mister Sinister’s absence in Fox’s X-Men movies is another reason why those films stagnated. Like Sony with Spider-Man, Fox kept using the same villains repeatedly. They sat on Mister Sinister for over a decade.

I initially scooped Mister Sinister for the MCU in May 2020. But the Geekosity website didn’t exist yet.

On the other hand, Marvel Studios tends to consider actors for several possible roles and not just one. Sources tell me that Marvel Studios always eyed Javier Bardem to play Doctor Doom.

Of the two, I prefer Javier Bardem as Doctor Doom. To be frank, there are only a few actors who can pull off Doctor Doom. Javier Bardem has those qualities.

As for Mister Sinister, Hamm is still interested. He said:

Something like the most recent Spider-Man [movie], which was such a cool iteration of that idea of the Multiverse and what’s happening and how three things can exist at the same time, it’s very creative. The way that they lean into that creativity is something that, for sure, I’d be happy to be a part of.

X-Men rumors heat up the closer it gets to SDCC.

Some of it cools off; others catch fire. In either case, Mister Sinister won’t go away.
