James Wan has revealed that Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom’s script has undergone significant changes over the past year.
Warner Bros. and DC have gone through several behind the scenes shakeups in recent years. The most recent will hopefully be the last for a while but I wouldn’t hold your breath.
Discovery’s merger with Warner Bros. led to the restructuring of DC Films which has now been rebranded as DC Studios. In addition, a franchise reboot has been given the green light leading to even more changes to The Flash.

Before this decision was made, the movie had already gone through multiple rewrites and plot alterations. However, The Flash isn’t the only upcoming DC movie that’s suffered from recent retooling.
Director James Wan has confirmed that Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom has also been affected by recent events. Nonetheless, James Wan revealed that the DCU’s new trajectory hasn’t drastically changed the sequel.
While some scenes have been reworked, Aquaman’s corner of the DC franchise is more isolated than other major characters. While talking to The Hollywood Reporter, James Wan explained:
“The DCU has been through lots of different versions, and one of the things that were challenging about this film was keeping track of what’s going on. Fortunately, the Aquaman universe is pretty far removed from the rest of the world, we’re going to many different underwater kingdoms that are not necessarily related to what’s happening with the other movies and characters, so we’re stand-alone in that respect. So I can just tell my story on its own without being affected too much, but at the same time, I have to be mindful of what’s been happening.”
Despite this, it’s still likely that there’s been some major behind the scenes adjustments to Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom. Prior to the Discovery merger, there was still no clear plan for the future of the DC franchise as a whole.
Former DC chief Walter Hamada was practically making it up as he went along. Moreover, there’s also the matter of the controversy surrounding Mera actress Amber Heard.

Apparently Heard’s role in the movie was significantly reduced after her allegations of domestic abuse were proven to be lies. Furthermore, there’s the rumors of the dreadful test screenings which saw some audience members walk out of the movie.
This has likely led to more reshoots to try and save the upcoming Aquaman sequel.
