Godzilla Vs Kong Adam Wingard ThunderCats Theatrical Film

Godzilla vs Kong director Adam Wingard has signed up to direct the ThunderCats theatrical film.

According to sources we should expect a darker, more grown-up version that is nonetheless faithful to its roots.

ThunderCats is a popular cartoon made by Rankin/Bass Animated Entertainment during the mid 1980s.

The cartoon lasted four seasons with 130 episodes.

It’s popular enough to be in the same ranks of Transformers, G.I. Joe, and He-Man.

The new ThunderCats theatrical film is planned to be a CGI hybrid animation.

Adam Wingard explained that the movie will be based on the ’80s animated series as a starting point.

He wants to keep it animated to stay true to the look of the characters.

He doesn’t want live action since he wants to avoid it looking like that film adaptation of a Broadway musical.

Note that this is not the first time ThunderCats was proposed to be turned into a movie.

In 2007, there was a plan to make a CGI movie which was to be released in 2010 which obviously never came to be.

Adam Wingard has worked on the Americanized version of Death Note (2017) and the updated Blair Witch (2017) movie.

Simon Barret, his longtime collaborator will be writing the ThunderCats film.

They both worked on several projects including Blair Witch and V/H/S.

Dan Lin and Roy Lee will be producing the movie; they also produced Godzilla vs Kong.

It seems that Adam Wingard is passionate about the project and it shows based on his interview with Deadline.

He tells Deadline:

ThunderCats is a dream project for me. When I was in high school, I was obsessed with it. I heard there was a ThunderCats script out there and it happened to be set up with some of my producers on Death Note. I asked them, I want to rewrite this script with my friend Simon Barrett. This is a huge passion thing for me.

Thundercats was also revived in 2011 with animation by Studio 4°C produced by Warner Bros. Animation.

The story was a prequel to the 1985 animation, but was cancelled after just only 26 episodes.

Another revival animation was ThunderCats Roar which was released in 2020.

This was more of a humorous take on ThunderCats which had similarities to Teen Titans Go but was cancelled after 52 episodes.

ThunderCats Roar was universally criticized for the art style and not respecting the source material.

We look forward to seeing what Adam Wingard can do since it does seem that he is a true fan of ThunderCats.
