Geoff Johns Had Spinoff Plans For Cancelled Stargirl

Creator Geoff Johns had spinoff plans for his Stargirl series. Unfortunately, two things prevent it from happening. First, Nexstar now owns a majority stake in the CW. Additionally, they seem to be pursuing other content for the network. And second, DC Studios has its future plans focused on a cohesive single universe. Unfortunately, Stargirl isn’t a part of that.

Even though this is a DC series, this is not part of the popular Arrowverse. Producer Greg Berlanti established Stargirl’s existence in the Arrowverse, implying she also exists in a parallel world. The show itself has gained a lot of praise. Sadly, last October 2022, production announced that the show is in its final legs. The third season is its last. The series finale aired on December 7, 2022.

Geoff Johns had substantial ideas for Stargirl. They even filmed two endings because there was a time that they didn’t know if it would continue or not. One ending would have set up Season Four. And they were even hoping that they could get another streaming service. But the universe has other plans.

Not only was Geoff Johns and his team planning for Season Four, but also a spinoff show called Infinity Inc. Johns has said in a recent interview with TV Line:

Yes, I think there was a great show in Infinity Inc, with The Shade and Jade hunting down the remaining family members — the sons and daughters and nephews and nieces — of the original JSA, those who were born with power that didn’t yet unlock it.

It was in Stargirl’s Season Two where the show introduced Jade, daughter of Alan Scott, aka Green Lantern. During Season Three, we got to see Richard Swift’s the Shade, Todd Rice’s Obsidian, Sandy Hawkins’ Sandy the Golden Boy. The characters were there, and Johns already had ideas for the show if it would move forward.

I think there would’ve been something fun about watching The Shade as a villain trying to reform himself by recreating a new superhero team. There would’ve been something really compelling about that as a show.

Infinity Inc. was part of the plans all along as it seems. Everything that fans have seen in the series are not one-offs. They designed everything to give hints that the show was really coming. That was the plan after all. Johns explained:

We go deep into the lore because we love the lore. People want to say, ‘Oh look, an Easter egg of the pink pen or the green lantern’ but those aren’t Easter eggs. Those are pathways to new stories. And what those stories are, my hope is we get to continue to tell these stories with more seasons of the show. We’ll see. But everything leads somewhere. And so, there’s no throwaway. There’s nothing that’s a throwaway mention, there’s nothing that’s a throwaway prop, there’s nothing that’s a throwaway anything. It might not be something we get to immediately, but it’s something we have plans for.

For DC fans, the CW looks bleak. They’re chopping the tree.

This includes Grant Gustin’s The Flash. Production announced that Season Nine will be its final. So far, the last one standing is Superman & Lois. Justice U, on the other hand, still has a big question mark.

And with DC Studios focusing on the DCU, the future of DC TV shows will be on HBO Max. Co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran will be overseeing everything under DC. We’ll have to wait and see what the team plans for DC’s future. People are hoping that there may be an announcement sometime soon after Warner Bros. Discovery’s meeting. For now, the general plan is WBD CEO David Zaslav wants no more unconnected multiverses moving forward.

It would have been interesting to see Johns’ Infinity Inc. considering how Stargirl was going so well. Unfortunately, it’s not going to happen.
