Florence Pugh’s Black Widow To Return In Thunderbolts Movie

Written by Edwin Francisco

Florence Pugh will return as Black Widow in Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts film. It is the first supervillain movie in the MCU. Florence Pugh debuted as Yelena Belova in Black Widow. However, it was in Disney Plus’ Hawkeye that Florence Pugh completely won over MCU fans.

We have heard about Thunderbolts for quite a while now. Former Marvel TV Jeph Loeb originally planned it as an ABC show. Obviously, that didn’t push through.

Geekosity owner Mikey Sutton scooped on March 12, 2021 that Marvel Studios was developing a Thunderbolts series. At the time, Marvel Studios looked at Disney Plus for its destination. Certainly, the Thunderbolts began appearing on the streamer. For example, Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl) and U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell) were on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

In other words, Marvel Studios began dropping the chess pieces.

In the comics, Zemo was the one who started the Thunderbolts. If you are not familiar with the team, just imagine Marvel Comics’ version of the Suicide Squad. Yes, reformed villains trying to do good. B-list and C-list characters filled the Suicide Squad. Likewise, the Thunderbolts had several lesser-known figures like the Beetle, Charcoal, and Speed Demon. Once in a while, there are also heroes in the mix, too. Hawkeye, Ant-Man, and even Luke Cage, were also members at some point.

Jake Schreier will direct Thunderbolts. Jake Schreier made the critical favorite, Robot & Frank. Recently, he has been working on TV shows like Minx, Brand New Cherry Flavor, Kidding and the upcoming Beef. He also produced videos for Kanye West, Justin Bieber, and HAIM.

Writer Kurt Busiek and artist Mark Bagley co-created the Thunderbolts. They debuted in The Incredible Hulk No. 449 in 1997.

Thunderbolts takes place after the events of Black Widow and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) will build the Thunderbolts. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier set this up. She never did say what team she was building, but fans knew. She already has Florence Pugh and U.S. Agent under her belt.

Some speculate the return of other criminals such as Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) from Black Widow, Ghost (Hannah Jon-Kamen) from Ant-Man and the Wasp, and the Abomination (Tim Roth) from The Incredible Hulk.

Florence Pugh’s popularity continues to grow.
