Doctor Strange Spin-Off Headed to Disney Plus

Brother Voodoo will conjure his own TV series on Disney Plus; he is spun off from the Doctor Strange sequel.

However, he probably won’t be called Brother Voodoo.

In 2009, writer Brian Michael Bendis changed his name to Doctor Voodoo in The New Avengers No. 53.

Marvel Comics switched the appellation for two reasons.

First, he replaced Doctor Strange as the Sorcerer Supreme.

Second, they saw Brother Voodoo as dated, cheesy, and potentially offensive.

Brother Voodoo reflects the character’s early ’70s roots in blaxploitation movies like director William Crain’s 1972 drive-in classic, Blacula.

For Marvel Studios, the alteration enables the general public to associate the character with Doctor Strange.

Moreover, from a marketing perspective, it’s gold.

An insider explained that:

Marvel Studios will introduce him as a Black Doctor Strange.

In addition, a source added that, once Benedict Cumberbatch hangs the cape, Doctor Voodoo will take his place.

Comics fans speculated the arrival of Brother Voodoo since 2016’s Doctor Strange.

In that film, Mark Anthony Brighton played Brother Voodoo’s brother, Daniel Drumm.

But Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen) killed him.

Brother Voodoo is Jericho Drumm.

Furthermore, he debuted in Strange Tales No. 169 in 1973.

Writers Stan Lee, Len Wein, Roy Thomas, and artist John Romita Sr. co-created the supernatural hero.

In the comic books, Jericho and Daniel Drumm are twins.

Jericho is a psychologist.

He returned to his homeland of Haiti to help his ailing brother.

A voodoo sorcerer placed a deadly spell on Daniel. He dies. Jericho promises to visit his mentor, Papa Jambo.

Jambo turns Jerico into his student.

Afterward, Jericho begins practicing voodoo.

The twins’ souls combine.

After Jambo passes away, Jericho becomes Brother Voodoo.

There’s no doubt that Marvel Studios will slightly tweak his origin to fit within MCU continuity.

Sources add that Doctor Voodoo will cross over into other Disney Plus series like Moon Knight.

However, this isn’t the first attempt at bringing Brother Voodoo to television.

After all, in 2003, the Sci-Fi Channel announced a Brother Voodoo TV movie.

But they dumped the project.

Moreover, the network junked the subsequent series as well.

Also, insiders revealed Doctor Voodoo is planned to join Midnight Sons on Hulu with the Punisher, Ghost Rider, Moon Knight, and Blade.

Doctor Voodoo will debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Marvel Studios has announced no casting for him yet.
