Doctor Strange Horror Animated Series in Discussions for Disney Plus

A Doctor Strange animated series is being discussed at Marvel Studios on Disney Plus.

On July 12, we scooped that Spider-Man was headed to Disney Plus in a new animated program.

This series, while not attached to the upcoming What If…?, will have similar quality standards.

Doctor Strange looks to be next.

On July 17, we broke on the Lords of the Longbox YouTube channel that Marvel Studios is developing a Doctor Strange animated show for Disney Plus.

Furthermore, this was three days before Variety‘s profile on Marvel Studios’ executive VP of film production Victoria Alonso.

Alonso revealed:

We have so much coming your way that you might tell us, ‘Okay, take a break now!’ We’re going to have our animation branch and mini studio, and there will be more to come from that as well. We’re super excited about animation, which is my first love.

It’s not a surprise that Disney gets some animation work outsourced.

What If…? is a joint production of Flying Bark Studios and Squeeze Studio.

It seems that the Marvel Studios animation branch and mini studio is still in the development stage.

This seems to confirm our previous report that Marvel Studios is developing more animated shows.

If you are wondering how this will affect Sony’s rights to use the animated version of the character, it will still be theirs.

As long as each episode lasts shorter than 40 minutes, Marvel and Disney retains the rights to Spider-Man and all related characters within the Spider-Verse.

Doctor Strange’s program is tentatively called Strange Tales and it will focus more on horror.

This will not be connected with What If…? since that show will revolve on alternate scenarios.

Strange Tales will be set in the MCU and include other supernatural heroes like Clea and Doctor Voodoo.

Strange Tales was an anthology series from Atlas Comics, later Marvel Comics, which ran from 1951 to 1968.

The comics focused more on horror; however, it included other genres, too.

Strange Tales also added superheroes or used familiar characters into their stories.

This is the series that introduced Doctor Strange in July 1963 and Nick Fury in August 1965.

The animated shows Spider-Man and Strange Tales are not final at this time.

Things can still change in the coming years.

Nevertheless, at the moment, these two are the best candidates to get into production.
