Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has achieved a great milestone of topping The Batman at the global box office. It’s now snagged more than $800 million worldwide.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had a lot of expectations. Spider-Man: No Way Home certainly raised them. Tom Holland’s third Spider-Man film introduced Marvel’s multiverse.

People re-watched No Way Home mainly to see the other Spider-Men get together, which seemed impossible a few years back.

However, for Marvel fans who watched the movies and the TV shows, this has been something they have long awaited. Especially with the answer to the question as to who is showing up in the multiverse. The return of Patrick Stewart as Professor X and Hayley Atwell as the live-action Captain Carter was already worth the admission.

The return of Anson Mount as the King of the Inhumans was a nice touch, acknowledging his run on the short-lived Inhumans series. Lashana Lynch as Captain Marvel of another universe is also a welcome sight. And the fan casting of John Krasinski as Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four becoming a reality was a treat.

Reaching $800 million is significant because 2016’s Doctor Strange film had $676 million globally. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness surpassed it. The 2016 film was released in November and lasted in the theaters until March of the following year. On the other hand, the sequel destroyed that in less than a month.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a monster hit. This is not typical superhero fare. Director Sam Raimi delivered a horror movie in MCU clothing. Granted, the Rotten Tomatoes scores landed below Marvel Studios’ standards.

In fact, The Batman acquired superior reviews. Therefore, critics expected The Batman to grab more tickets than Raimi’s Evil Dead epic. Yet Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness prevailed.

As of this writing, the domestic box office is over $342 million. Sources believe the picture will reach $400 million in the U.S.

Will it hit $1 billion?

Possibly.

Well, that is still up in the air. Nevertheless, the success of the movie is almost an assurance that Doctor Strange 3 is a go. Especially with how they ended the film. Although, based on how Marvel Studios plans their movies, we don’t think they will rush a follow-up. Remember, it took Marvel Studios six years to make this.

They were able to include Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) in several other movies.

No doubt that Doctor Strange is an important character in the MCU. But right now, Marvel Studios is laying down the cards for their other films.

There is no doubt that Doctor Strange still has a lot to tell in the MCU.
