A lot the plans before the pandemic have been delayed. One of those plans was Disney intent to acquire all the characters related to Spider-man from Sony. Nevertheless, it looks like Disney is again looking into this possibility based on recent developments.

We all know that Disney is doing everything it can to get all the characters back to Marvel.

Marvel has unfortunately split up a lot of their characters to different companies through the years because of financial issues that they were facing at the time.

Universal has the Hulk and Namor, 20th Century Fox had the X-men in 1993 and the Fantastic Four in 1986, and Sony got Spider-Man in 1998.

They had different conditions depending on the company.

But Sony’s Spider-Man was required to make movies every 5 years to retain the ownership.

This is one of the reasons why Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 didn’t materialize, since they weren’t able to get a proper script in time, Sony wanted to reboot it instead.

Ever since then, Disney was able to acquire 20th Century Fox for a whopping $71.3 billion back in March 2019.

Because of this, Disney was able to get a lot of major popular franchises like Alien, Die Hard, Kingsman, Planet of the Apes, and even Narnia, to name some.

But the most important thing that they got out of this, was that they were able to return all the X-Men and the Fantastic Four characters back to Marvel.

Back in October of 2019, Geekosity owner Mikey Sutton reported that Disney was planning to acquire Sony’s rights to Spider-Man and all related characters for the amount of $4 to $5 billion.

But this was all delayed because of the Pandemic which halted a lot of the deals being made.

This also delayed a lot of Marvel and Sony’s plans which resulted to delayed movies, shows and more.

No one was safe during this time and everyone was adjusting on how to move forward.

Now it’s 2021, and Disney might get back on track in considering getting Spider-man rights again.

But this time, Disney might have a different advantage that they didn’t have back in 2019.

Disney was just in time to establish their streaming service and solidified their position during the Pandemic.

Disney’s movies, even if they were weak in 2020, have a significant increase in box office sales in 2021.

Meanwhile, Sony had a weak 2020 as expected, but their 2021 performance is drastically low and seemingly dependent on Venom and Spider-Man to catch up with the box office sales.

We know that Sony is still working on making movies based on the Spider-verse with Kraven The Hunter and the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse sequel already in the works.

It’s obvious that Sony won’t let go of Spider-man so easily.

It is a money maker for them.

But with Sony Pictures performance as a whole, it is questionable if it can move forward without Marvel’s popular characters.

No company was free from the Pandemic, but it shows that Sony took more devastating blows than Disney thanks to Disney+.

So, do you think Disney will try to buy the Spider-man rights, or will they try to buy the entire movie division?
