DC Animated Series Could Land On Amazon If New Deal Is Reached

DC characters in animated form could end up on Amazon if a new deal pushes through. Despite playing second fiddle to Marvel in live action, DC often tops them in animation. Easily. No contest there.

Most notably, they achieve this with Bruce Timm and Paul Dini’s DC Animated Universe. This connected franchise consisted of several animated films and TV shows. These include Batman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League, and Static Shock, to name a few. Too many.

Furthermore, they also introduced us to the late, great voice actor Kevin Conroy. His timeless portrayal of Batman thrilled generations. In fact, Conroy left an indelible mark on the Dark Knight. Thus, he would go on to reprise in various animated movies, TV series and video games. He was the best.

In recent years, DC’s main focus has been to create a cohesive live-action cinematic universe. Unfortunately, due to poor leadership and studio interference, the DCEU didn’t reach the same heights as the DCAU. Nonetheless, it’s sounding like DC Studios plans to get back into the animation game.

Recently DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn confirmed that animation will play a role in his plans. In addition, Channing Dungey, the head of Warner Bros. TV, gave us a promising update on DC’s future in animation. Moreover, she also revealed that Warner Bros. and Amazon are on the verge of a major distribution deal. This’ll see brand new animated DC content appear on both HBO Max and Amazon Prime.

Dungey teased this exciting collaboration at Content London.

She revealed:

One of the interesting things that’s exciting for me at this moment, the approach of the previous management was much more like ‘Everything has to stay in house, we don’t want anything to go outside,’ David Zaslav has been much more open to our exploring all of our animated IP and being able to do it on different platforms. Certainly HBO Max is going to be our first stop but we’re already in the process of closing a big deal with Amazon that’s going to feature some of our DC-branded content in animation.

Something very big is cooking behind the scenes at Warner Bros. TV and Amazon. Hopefully, we will get a taste soon.
