Chris Hemsworth Suggests He Might Leave His Thor Role

Written by Edwin Francisco

For some days now, rumors are floating that Thor: Love and Thunder might be Chris Hemsworth’s last time being Thor.

I presume the rumor started because of the Wired’s “Answer the Web’s Most Searched Questions” segment which is watchable online. They asked him, “What is Chris Hemsworth’s last marvel movie?” Afterwards, Chris Hemsworth answered:

Well the last [Marvel movie] I shot was Thor: Love and Thunder and it might be my last Marvel movie, I don’t know. It was a wild and fun and wacky experience, as all Taika Waititi movies are.

Played that character for ten, eleven, years now, and each time it’s been new and exciting, and this was no exception to that. It felt very fresh and it felt like we were trying something we hadn’t tried before. I was, in Taika’s words, I think a wacky, wild, romantic comedy set in space.

His answer started the speculation that this could possibly be his last. Nevertheless, the media sometimes places celebrities in a tight spot. They’re not able to be completely honest. Andrew Garfield experienced this. In addition, they have not had the time to create a safe answer,

Remember, they signed non-disclosure agreements (NDAs). In other words, if there is any future plan, they’ll deny it.

In an interview with BBC Radio, Ali Plumb reminded Chris Hemsworth that he has been playing Thor for 11 years. His stint currently spans eight films. Hugh Jackman played Wolverine for 16 years (with nine films). And would Chris Hemsworth see himself to beat Jackman’s record? He explained:

I wasn’t gonna but now that you’ve put that in front of me, you make a good point. It’s only six years. I’ve come this far. To turn back now would just be a waste.

This interview feels more on the spot than before. But it does give the audience hope. It sounds like Chris Hemsworth has a reason to stay.

Now, because of the confusing answers from Chris Hemsworth. Will he or will he not come back as Thor in a future Marvel film? Extra TV had to ask to confirm, and he replied:

Every time I play Thor I’m like, ‘This is the last time they’ll let me do it.’ So, I don’t know. I’d just come back for more and more until someone kicks [him] off the stage. I love it. My whole career has been based around playing this character, and to come back again and again and play it with different directors and different cast has been an absolute joy.

We’ll see. We’ll see what the fans want. I’m down for whatever is enjoyable and having a good time, and that’s what this experience in the Marvel world has been for me, so bring it on.

Marvel Studios can bring back any character they want. The question is if the actors want to.

Remember that after Thor: The Dark World, we didn’t think Natalie Portman would return as Jane Foster. After all, she seemed done with the character. She didn’t even return for Avengers: Endgame that Marvel had to use old footage from Thor: The Dark World. But after some talk with director Taika Waititi, Portman was happy to return as Jane Foster as the Mighty Thor.

As far as Chris Hemsworth’s answers about staying as Thor, the door seems to be clearly open. He loves playing the character. In fact, he even played Thor in Marvel’s animated series What If…? He also returned to the Loki series just to voice Throg, even though we barely hear him.

It seems that Marvel Studios has either told him to not say anything about other films or they haven’t told him anything yet. So, he says that Thor: Love and Thunder might be his last. But if given the opportunity, he’ll keep on playing as long as he is having fun and the audience still wants to see him play the role.
